Mac status menu icon dropdown doesn't open file location on click

Explorer | Level 3

This is in regards to Dropbox on a Mac.

When selecting/clicking a file from "Recent" in Dropbox's status menu dropdown, the Finder used to open a new window at that file's location. As of recently, it stopped doing this. Now, only common files like jpg's, txt, mp4's, word docx's, etc open from the dropdown selections and they do so by opening directly thier corresponding application (e.g. an mp4 opens in VLC, docx opens in Word) rather than opening a window at the file's location in Finder. Is there a configuration I can use to return to the Finder window opening at the file's location? Thanks.

Hi there @LloydXmas, I'd be more than happy to help!

I'll just need a bit more info regarding what you see in your Recents tab. For example:

Let me know what you find!

Do you see the name of the parent folder under the file you want to open?

I'm not sure what you mean by "under" the file. The Recents dropdown shows recents files and recent folders added to Dropbox. There is no directory structure shown in this dropdown, so no parent folder is shown "under" the file.

  • If you do, without clicking on the file itself, are you able to click the folder name?

No directory structure is shown. If however there is a folder created recently, it will show that in Recents. Clicking on the folder used to open a Finder window at that folder's location. It no longer does this.

I don't know what you mean by "the desktop app." Do you mean the folder opening in a Finder window? If so, then no it doesn't do that anymore.

I'm attaching a short gif of me clicking things in the dropdown and nothing happening. Thanks for your help.

The desktop app is our one of our core features @LloydXmas.

You should be able to see the little Dropbox icon within your computer's menu bar when you're running it.

Linking from the page @Lusil has quoted above, here's what you need to do for your files to open within your computer's Finder:

  1. Click the Dropbox icon in your menu bar
  2. Click your profile picture or initials in the upper right corner.
  3. Click Preferences….
  4. Click the dropdown next to Open folders in: and choose Finder/File Explorer instead of Dropbox desktop app.

Let us know how this goes!

Thanks again for your help. The Open folders in option does not appear in preferences.

Perhaps I have an older version of Dropbox, I'll try updating it.

Looks like I may have the most recent version: v84.3.160

Walter, that Dropbox installer installed an older version (v83.4.152). I still don't see a dropdown in preferences with Open folders in option. Are you sure this is a Mac feature?

Definitely @LloydXmas!

Could you post a screenshot of what options you get when accessing the desktop app's preferences so we can have a visual too?

Thanks in advance and happy Monday too!

Ah, you're on a beta version of the desktop app @LloydXmas

I just checked this on a Mac device and I'm getting the option to 'Open in Finder' normally on the General tab of the desktop app's preferences when on v83.4.152.

Could you try this build and let me know what you find?

To do this, you will first need to follow these steps to verify that you have opted out of "Include me in early releases" option in your settings on Dropbox.com. This will ensure that the application does not automatically update to the beta build after you install the latest stable build:

  1. Log in to www.Dropbox.com using your web browser.
  2. Click on you account picture/avatar at the top right corner of the page.
  3. Click on "Settings".
  4. From the "General" tab, scroll down to the section titled "Preferences" and uncheck the box next to "Include me in early releases" if it is checked.

Then, use the following link to install the latest stable version of the Dropbox desktop application:

https://www.dropbox.com/downloading?build=83.4.152&plat=mac&type=full

Let me know the results!
