Re: Move Dropbox folder from C: (SSD) to D: (1 TB) Hard Drive

Hey there @katyq, I'm sorry to hear that you're having trouble with this!

So we can double check which Dropbox folder is actually syncing, can you please:

  1. Click the Dropbox icon in your menu bar/system tray.
  2. Click the profile pic/initials icon in the top right of the window.
  3. Choose "Preferences..."
  4. Go to the "Sync" tab.

From here you should be able to see the current location of the Dropbox folder, do you see this pointing to the C drive or D drive?

Also, from what you mentioned, it may be that the files moved to the D drive were smart synced and set as "online only" which reduces the space they take on the hard drive. Perhaps this is why they are showing as not taking space on the D drive, and they may be locally synced on the C drive so the files are taking space.

Let me know what you find and we'll go from there - thanks!

Hi,

Referring back to my post on here in September.....what I feared might happen HAS happened. A recent Windows update caused my PC to restart. I didn't notice immediately, but that restart caused the syncing Dropbox folder to be (once again) set up on the C Drive, not the D Drive which is the location to which I'd moved it (there isn't enough space on my C Drive for all my files). I now have 2 Dropbox folders on my PC - one syncing and in the wrong place, and one in the correct place but not syncing.

Because I didn't notice this for a couple of days, some of the D Drive files I've edited in the meantime are now different from the (same) files on the syncing C Drive. I'll have to go through as many of the edited (D) files as I can remember and repeat the edits on the C Drive clones.

This internal Dropbox insistence on setting itself up on the C Drive is a major problem and seems to me to also be a major design fault in your software. If you cannot fix this, I'm going to remove Dropbox from my PC and business and you will lose me as a customer.

Paul.

Hi @Paulo53, thanks for updating us here!

Would you mind just letting me know which version of the desktop app you currently have installed? Are you possibly on a beta version of the app, denoted with xx.3.xxx?

Keep me posted!

Hi Daphne,

If I hover over the Dropbox icon on the taskbar, a box pops up that says:

'Dropbox 84.4.170' ......and underneath is:

'Up To Date'

Is that the correct info for you?

Paul

That's perfect @Paulo53, thanks for that!

Would you mind if I reached out to the email address associated with your Community profile? Through our Support channel I'll be able to have a look into some device specific info which would be helpful for the issue that you're having.

Let me know - cheers!
