Clicking on font files (TTF or OTF) makes Finder crash

Helpful | Level 5

If I click on a font file (otf or ttf) that is not stored locally, Finder crashes. This only happens in "cover view" in Finder. It prevents me from working as I use this view the most.

Can you please have the team look at this? It's NOT an "Apple bug" like someone from the Dropbox team wrote in another thread. It only happens to smart synced files which means it's clearly a bug in Dropbox.

Hey @Pookeyblow, kindly note that this discussion has been inactive for (almost) two years, so this makes me think that this is either a very rare occurrence or this has been resolved after these reports. Nonetheless, as it seems that this has been affecting you at the moment & I’d like to follow-up on that as much as possible, could you include a step-by-step description of what caused this issue & (if possible) a screenshot of what you’re seeing before Finder crashes, in order to send you the most relevant follow-up steps?

Once I have these details, I’ll try to focus on that a bit closer. Thanks in advance!

Re: Smart Sync makes Finder to "crash" when tries to show a font preview

Helpful | Level 5

Why doesn't Dropbox simply create a preview app that allows "online only" files to be previewed? This would solve so many issues. For example, when I need to access large Photoshop files for which I have set to "online only", I need to first set them to "local" and wait for them to download just to preview them. This is such a waste of time just to view the file to see a preview so that I know if it's the file I'm looking for.

Many users don't have enough local hard drive space, which is why we set large files to "online only" instead of "local". That seems to be one of the main reasons for having this "online only" feature is it not? The inability to simply preview a font without crashing the Mac Finder folder is not acceptable. Apple certainly isn't going to create a fix for something that's only an issue with Dropbox Sync, so the recommendation by Dropbox to contact Apple regarding this is quite odd.

I've mentioned this possible easy fix to Dropbox in the past, but it apparently falls on deaf ears. Create a preview app for viewing files set to "online only" please! Otherwise, users are unable to use the "online only" feature on large files without having to wait to download them first. The other issue with having to set to "local" just to enable the option to view a file is we have to remember to turn it back to "online" after we preview. This is not a streamlined work process.

Please fix this! It will make the world of difference. Marking this thread as "solved" is a bit dishonest. Thanks.

Why create a separate program when you can simply do that on the Dropbox website?

I agree, but they just made a desktop app and it's horrible for previewing files. No possibility to enlarge thumbnails. Online only files takes forever to load. This stuff should work like the Photo app on the Mac where it's super quick to view photos stored in the cloud.

@Pookeyblow I agree 100%. I've been having numerous issues with the new desktop app. I'm unable to even uplaod a large amount of files without it failing or showing strange errors such as "file no longer exists" even though I didn't change any of the files during the upload process. The inability to preview large previews is a huge inconvenience, especially with "online only" files. Having to open a large Photoshop file for example, just to see if it's the file I'm looking for is a big time waster. Not sure why they can't keep a large preview of each file for quick preview. Like you said, Apple is able to achieve this with their Photo app cloud files.
