What's the best way to reinstall the desktop app?

Explorer | Level 3

I have a new PC.

I want to install Dropbox.

I don't want to sync everything and have it download from the internet.

I can just make a copy onto USB and copy accross. 🙂

But... will this cause problems?

WHEN should I copy all files?

I install Dropbox.

Immediately it starts to sync!

I'm just a little afraid I might cause problems with syncing if I simply copy the files?

i.e. Dropbox will go mad and create duplicate conflict copies?

Thanks.

Hey there @Omar M.3 - I'd suggest that you let it sync until it shows "Up to date" before doing anything!

Now, note that Dropbox can be used with an external hard drive as long as you can ensure the drive is always connected to your computer while Dropbox is running. If the drive is ever disconnected from the computer while Dropbox is running there is a small chance that the Dropbox software will start deleting files before realizing that the entire drive has been removed.

Additionally, you should ensure that the file system of the external drive meets the file system requirements. Those can be found in the following Help Center article:

https://www.dropbox.com/help/desktop-web/system-requirements

To move your Dropbox folder to an external drive if needed use the steps in the following Help Center article:

https://www.dropbox.com/help/desktop-web/move-dropbox-folder

[The location you select is the folder the Dropbox folder will be moved to, rather than the folder your Dropbox files will be stored in.]

If you'd like to free up space on your computer using our desktop app, Selective sync might be preferable in this case.

Last but not least, you can also avoid installing our app if you don't want to sync across devices and just access your files through the web at:  https://www.dropbox.com/

I hope this helps and please let me know if you have any questions Omar!

Thanks for the reply.

This doesn't answer my question.

It's got nothing to do with an external drive. 😕

- I am setting up a new PC
- I want to save syncing of 20,000 files - I can just copy accross from a USB stick for example from the original PC

What's the best way to do this?
Surely you don't expect people to sync 20,000 files when they have the files with them?

Having dropbox and using after files are copied - yes, I want syncing done and one copy kept on all PCs that have the files.

Does that make sense?

Thanks.

Thanks for the additional information and sorry for missing your actual pain point @Omar M.3!

To set your Dropbox on your new computer, you just need to install Dropbox on the computer in question: https://www.dropbox.com/downloading

and then enter your username and password when prompted.

As you noticed, the Dropbox application will begin downloading the files in your Dropbox folder for you automatically once you log in.

If you already have your Dropbox folder somewhere else and you want to move it to the new computer without downloading everything from the website, please refer to the instructions in the following Help center article:

https://www.dropbox.com/help/desktop-web/move-to-new-computer

I hope this helps!

Hi. Best way to install dropbox on a second machine is to ensure that you have LAN Sync enabled on both PC's. Install dropbox on new PC and if they are both on the same LAN network then it will copy all your files across the network and not from the internet. That way it does everything and you have no syncing worries. LAN Sync is tucked away under dropbox Settings, Preferences, Bandwidth. Used that method just now and it worked like a charm. Cheers.
