"Map Network Drive" Dropbox folder from central server

New member | Level 2

I have 10 workstations and a central server.  I installed dropbox on just my server.  I then mapped the dropbox folder (located on the central server) to each of my 10 workstations.

I figure this way will save my bandwidth.  Instead of a file needing to be downloaded and synced on 10 workstations, it will be downloaded only once on my server.

So far things seem to be ok, but I am not sure if this will cause any issues with my files going forward.  Has anyone done this before?

Hey @kalvinlee, kindly note that it’s not currently recommended to share the Dropbox folder, or any folders inside the Dropbox folder, over your local network, so it would be best if you installed the Dropbox desktop app on each workstation you’d like to work on separately.

However, since I understand that your files have already been uploaded to the Dropbox servers, I’d suggest utilizing LAN syncing, which will allow Dropbox to look for new files on your Local Area Network first, bypassing the need to download the file from Dropbox servers, thus speeding up the syncing process considerably.

In any event Kalvin, I’ll also leave this question open to our Community of users; maybe someone could offer their insight on how you’d best go about this request. Thanks for taking the time to drop us a line on the Community & please let me know here if you have any follow-up questions or thoughts about any of the above!
