I have an issue with Smart Sync and my coding project. Any ideas?

Smartsync may be the reason I move to iCloud, for good. Since formatting my computer and getting my dropbox folder on (been two days), the thing is syncing and I don't (still) have my codebase back in place. I keep my code under dropbox for fail safe reasons. But the smartsync function seems to be randomly downloading files (and not downloading them) which render my project as not buildable (as Xcode won't pose as a request for the file to download, it will just report its missing). 

Great idea, not so great execution.

Hey there @t-d-p  - sorry to hear about this.

Just to make sure we're on the same page, could you first send me the exact status of the desktop app as shown on your device at the moment?

You can always look at the Dropbox icon in your menu bar and see if it is done syncing. When Dropbox is fully synced then you should see a tick followed by the words “Up to date” on the menu.

If you do not see this then can you please let me know what the message being displayed reads?

If you could provide a screenshot of the problem you're facing, it would be very helpful.

It's been like this for 3 days. Really fast wifi here, live across the street from Dropbox HQ. 
The problem is, its "picking and choosing" what files do download in this process. Which is really not smart in the sense of user's workflows. It may be as a cloud-dev strategy for you guys, but it renders me uproductive untill I get all files for that specific folder in. 

Also, this is what I see in the folder and clicking it to change it to local does nothing:

Also, when doing both screenshots, dropbox is now popping up a screen to ask me to do whatever... really?

Thanks for your speedy response and additional information @t-d-p - much appreciated!

At this point, I'll need you to perform a reboot on the affected computer and maybe change your bandwidth settings

Let me know if the status of the app looks exactly the same after rebooting please and we'll take it from there.

If you'd like to see whether there are files in your Dropbox that may have problematic file names, you can try our lookup tool: https://www.dropbox.com/bad_files_check

On a side note, if you'd like to disable syncing your screenshots, you can do it from within the Preferences of your desktop app by following these steps:

  1. Click on the Dropbox icon in the menu bar.
  2. Click the Gear icon.
  3. Click Preferences.
  4. Click Import.
  5. Uncheck "Save screenshots to your personal Dropbox".
