Re: Latest update broken package installer integration in Android

I am seeing this problem as well on version 116.2.4.

App is unable to open Package Installer directly. Currently have to download apk file to device then open the apk through my files app. Made sure unknown sources are allowed from within dropbox app as well (Android 9).

Installation works correctly from files app and properly opens the Package Installer.

Other devices on older builds continue to work correctly.

No longer able to install .apk files on Android phones from dropbox

Hi all - My company builds a smartphone app, and we use Dropbox as the main way we get the app file (.apk) onto all of our test phones for pre-release testing. When the app is built, it is automatically uploaded to Dropbox. All of our Android test phones are signed into a Dropbox account that allow us to instantly download and install the latest app file. As of this week, when we try to install the app file from Dropbox, none of the test phones are able to install the app. The phone package installer gives an "App not installed" message with no further explanation (all phones are still set to allow install of apps from unknown sources). This occurs with any .apk file that we have tested with.

Through a much more complex path we have been able to install the .apk on all of these devices, suggested the issue is not with the app itself. I realize this may not be a Dropbox issue, but I wonder if anyone else has experienced this, is aware of possible Google/Android changes that might explain it, and has potential workarounds. Thanks!

Re: No longer able to install .apk files on Android phones from dropbox

Hi there, when you download the apk file from Dropbox, are you downloading it through the mobile app, or using a shared link to download it via a browser on the phones?

Additionally, if you download the apk file to a computer, could you check if it was corrupted somehow during upload? If you have an Android emulator on the machine, you can test this out there.

Let me know how it goes!

Thanks Jay - issue actually had to do with a bug in our version code, so we were able to sort it out. Thank you though!

Re: No longer able to install .apk files on Android phones from dropbox

I'm seeing similar install issue. I was able to install apk easily but for the last couple days (maybe after Android security software update), I can't install anymore. The apk themselves have not changed. Dropbox is on the list of approved apps that can install apk from unknown sources. I am able to temporarily get around the issue by exporting the file from Dropbox to the local files and install from there, confirming that the apk files are ok.

APK files no longer will open on my smartphone but still open on Samsung tablet.

APK files have worked for years from Dropbox but recently the screen just flashes and I'm back to the list of files.  It's got nothing to do with "untrusted sources".  APK files still open fine from my Samsung tablet.  Package Installer is the defaulted app in dropbox, on both my phone and tablet.

Dropbox tech support claims "it never worked".  They claim you have to download APK files from dropbox to device.   NOT TRUE!!!   This USED to work fine.

I think a Dropbox update may have messed things up.

HELP!!!  I'm tired of moving files from dropbox to my device before I can open APK's.
