Have not logged into this account in years. It was essentially dormant. Why have my photos disappeared, where did they go, and are they gone forever?

If you haven't signed in to your account in years, then the account was likely deleted and you're now signed in to a new, empty account. If an account remains idle for more than a year, it's deleted due to inactivity. Dropbox sends multiple reminder emails before this happens.

Unfortunately, once an account has been deleted, neither the account nor the files that were in it can be recovered.
