Re: Not receiving the 6 digit code email

Hey Dropbox community!

I hope everyone is having a good experience using Dropbox, and in the spirit making things smoother, I figured it would be helpful to give some advice on how to fix some recurring issues related to your account access, more specifically your one-time security code (sent via email). As you may know, if Dropbox detects a suspicious sign-in attempt, it will send a one-time security code to the email address associated with your Dropbox account.

So, what happens if you didn’t receive the email with the code?
There are a couple of reasons for this:

  • The email is on your spam folder
  • The email could be delayed
  • You don’t have access to your Dropbox email
What can you do about it

  • Check your Email Spam Folder: It sounds silly, but make sure you are checking the correct email associated with your Dropbox account, then check your spam folder. Using Gmail as an example.
    • If the email isn’t there, add no-reply@dropbox.com to your contacts.
  • Check linked mobile/desktop clients to retrieve the 6-digit code. The code is always sent to both email and all linked devices.
  • The email could be delayed: Occasionally, email providers can have a delay in their service, so its just a matter of time for you to receive the code.
  • Bypass the verification code: If you are sure that none of the above is the case, in order to bypass the one time verification code sent via email, your password would need to be reset. You can defer the one time verification by resetting the password.

If you are locked out from your Dropbox account because you cannot access the email of the account and you cannot receive the 6-digit verification code.

  • If you have a device that is currently linked to your Dropbox account, you can regain access through that device using the following steps:

  1. After attempting to log in with the expired email address on the account, click “I can’t recover my account using this page”.
Screenshot 2023-08-09 at 18.05.48.png

  1. You’ll see a prompt asking if you have a device linked to the Dropbox account. Click “yes” to proceed.
  2. You’ll then see a page with the button “Send notifications”. Please note that this will send notifications to all of your linked devices and mobile apps.
  3. Open the notification, which should take you to the Dropbox app.
  4. Click “details”. This will open up a browser or view, where you can enter a new email. You’ll receive a password reset link in your new email address’s inbox. After you’ve reset your password, your Dropbox account email will be switched to your new email.

If you don’t have access to a linked device and no access to the email.

Then you may need to authenticate yourself manually. You can contact support from an incognito/private browsing window and submit a help request. Click Can’t sign in? then select your issue, for example: Forgot or can’t access sign in email

A lot of info here, but hope this helps as a first measure!

Thank you!

Locked out of dropbox

08/12//2023

On 7/31/2023 Someone who claims to be Paul [removed] of NYCwebdesign took my website off line with the help of Hostinger my domain.  The next day he called me asking for $7,000 in cryto to put it al back.

I recorded some incriminating conversations with him and put them in a file in dropbox.  After that I was locked out of the dropbox account so the further talks on the phone I recorded to my phone.

Somehow he was able to turn on the 2 step verification to dropbox which I had not used before.

All my videos and trailers, ids, and contracts are still intact in dropbox but I no longer have access to any of them.  The links are still working though.

I opened an account with Namecheap.

Hostinger played a part in my website robbery.  When I tried to file the recovery program they told me the next day I needed to send more documents.  The next day me and my business lawyer Wesley [removed] put all the documents together and when we tried to send them to Hostinger we were locked out of the recovery program.

When I tried to send the documents per recovery email Hostinger Alexis responds you cannot send documents through the email system, you have to use the recovery program which me and my lawyer are locked out of.

When Mr [removed] learned I really was not paying his ransomware he threw a fit.  Allied Technologies is rebuilding my website for free but I am no longer going through Hostinger.

Hostinger can do what they want with the websites.  I opened and account with Namecheap and changed .net to .org of my Discipline Entertainment company.

My documents, contracts, ids, videos, and trailers are all in Dropbox.

When I try to login I get passed the user ID and password but when it sends a verification code to my email [removed], in the beginning I would get the code and when I put it in the verification address it would say the number they sent me was wroing.

Eventually it quite sending me verification numbers but still asks for a 6 digit code.  When I tell Dropbox I do not have a 6 digit code it asks for a 8 digit code that was never created.

Dropbox chat is a program.  You do not actually chat with a real person.  It refers you to an article, then asks did this help? Yes?  No?  Another question? And loops into this no matter what you ask for or explain.

I have used the Dropbox phone number [removed].  Again we have an answering machine with different options then hangs up on you.  Whatever option you choose it explains what to do on the internet  which doesn’t work and then it hangs up on you.  You never talk to a real person.

I am all ears on how I can get into my dropbox account.

Dropbox has sent me a bill for their services, I mark monthly, not yearly because of the current situation, the program switches over to yearly which me and my bank will not pay until Dropbox lets me login into my account.

Hey @rdhall1963, thanks for reaching out to us.

From what I gathered from your post, you're trying to login to your Dropbox account, but are not receiving the 6-digit code, is that right?

I've moved your post to a thread dealing with the same issue.

Can you take a look at the solution Samantha posted here, to see if that helps?

Please log a ticket ,for me,to close my account, delete my files and permanently stop billing me.

I should be able to put that ticket in myself. The fact that there is no way for me to directly contact Dropbox

is a red flag to me.

Thank-you in advance for closing my account immediately.

Hi @Ebner, as this is related to sensitive billing info, I’d recommend getting in contact with our support team directly to look into this matter in more detail.

You can do this by opening an incognito/private browsing window, while not signed into your account, and accessing this link, choose 'Other' and then put in an email address that you can access, followed by your billing info.

Hey @Ammarjadoon83, I hope you’re doing well.

Dropbox may prompt you to enter a one-time security code every once in a while, so as to increase the security of your account.

If you haven’t tried this already, can you also add no-reply@dropbox.com to your email contacts and try to re-send the security code to your email address?

In case that doesn’t work either, let me know and I can open a support ticket for you instead.

Let me know when you've got more updates!

Hi Megan

Thank you for your reply. I have tried number of times and it does not ask for security code, only thing its asking is email verification code and i keep checking my emails but not emails from drobox are coming through.

I remember i had similar issue a while ago as well and someone from drobox had to remove verification prompt for me to log into the account.

Can you please raise a ticket to resolve my issues.

Thank you
