Edits in shared folder added to someone else's account

If I share a folder with a colleague and they add it to their Dropbox files, will edits they make show up in the folder in my account? Or will adding it to their account make it independent of my account?

Hey there @CAA - welcome to our forums!

Did you invite them to the folder in question to begin with or just shared a link to the folder instead?

If you shared a link note that it's for view only rights - not editing. Even if they access your shared link and add the folder in their account and work on it, they'd be working on their own copy of the file and not the same folder as you.

To tackle this, just invite them to the folder directly by sharing it with them (instead of a shared link that is) while you should also bear in mind that they'd need to have the required quota to be able to work on it - for more information you can take a look here: https://www.dropbox.com/help/files-folders/storage-space

I hope this helps and please let me know if I'm missing anything here. Thank you!

Hi, Walter. I actually want them to work on their own file (and be able to share it from there) without changing my copy of the folder. So it sounds like I actually should send them a shared link, is that right? Will a "Can View" link let them add the folder to their own account and work on it? Or do I have to send a "Can Edit" link? The reason I don't want them to change my folder is because the project I worked on with this colleague is complete. But now they are using the same items in the folder for a related project.

Thanks!

Oh I see now @CAA  - thanks for the additional info!

In that case, you're spot on; shared links would be the way to go as this would let them add a copy of the folder to their own account without affecting yours.

One a side note, should you ever need others to upload files to your account directly you can use our File Requests feature

Let me know if you have any more questions!
