I can't sync; I'm getting an error message that I'm running out of hard disk space.

I have used only 500 MB space in my desktop Dropbox. But the files aren't synced with the message your hard drive is full. But, I understand dropbox provides until 3 GB of free space for storage

Hey there (@Veena_Dolphin), I'll do my best to relay your available options moving forward & we’ll take it from there!

  • For starters, kindly bear in mind that the Dropbox Basic plan comes with 2 GB of space and is free however if you want more space or features, you can upgrade to Dropbox Plus, Professional, or Business. Depending on your plan, the price of your Dropbox account will change.
  • From there, if your pc/Mac is low on hard drive space, then you may have to remove some files locally or put your files inside the Dropbox folder & (once they’ve fully synced to your account online) then remove them from your Selective Sync settings.

Hopefully my tips above are-even slightly- helpful in regards to your initial inquiry however I’d happily further answer any follow-up questions you may have. Enjoy the rest of your day until we talk again!

And remember that the Dropbox folder on your computer is a folder like any other. Anything you store in the folder takes up space on your local drive. It is not, by default, a cloud-based folder where the content only exists online.

Is there a way where you can just view it access it online without having it take up valuable local HD space?

Re: Sync Problem

Hey there (@Rexquire), there is a way to accomplish that with Dropbox indeed (depending on your plan). The feature you’re referring to is called Smart Sync & is currently available for Dropbox Business and Dropbox Professional accounts. Smart Sync essentially lets you keep all your important files on your pc, without them taking up (almost) any space.

From there, depending on your needs, you could combine our Selective Sync & Smart Sync features to save up some space & keep only the files you really need available across your devices. Of course, you can always use our website to view your filestructure.

Please let me know if you have any additional questions or you need assistance in any way & I’ll do my best to check back with you asap. Happy Monday!
