When can i delete synced files from my harddrive

Level 2

I have done the sync thing and many but not all files are apparently uploaded as duplicates of what I have on my hard drive. They also appear (as synced, I think) within the DropBox desktop icon.

My disk is nearly maxed out. Is it now safe to DELETE the original (now presumably stored in DropBox cloud) files from my hard drive? Or do I create aliuses? Is it now aliuses  I have listed in my DropBox icon window?

Guess I haven't really figured out the basic functions. I have, I believe, a paid "Pro" account.

Hey there @bookman - how are you today?

Is your desktop app showing 'up to date' or is it still syncing changes?

First and foremost, allow me to clarify that, when it comes to our desktop application, our software is designed to watch your Dropbox folder and sync any files placed in the folder. Your Dropbox folder is just like any other folder on your hard drive, but with syncing features.

To take advantage of Dropbox, you can either move or copy files into the Dropbox folder as this will place the files into the Dropbox folder. Once Dropbox sees changes in the Dropbox folder, it automatically syncs the new changes to Dropbox servers and to any other computer linked to your account.

For more information on adding and deleting files to and from your Dropbox (and screenshots) check out these resources:

1. https://help.dropbox.com/desktop-web/add-files

2. https://help.dropbox.com/desktop-web/delete-files

As you know, you can always access your Dropbox online at https://www.dropbox.com

Moving on to your concern now, note that Selective Sync is a feature that allows you to choose which folders to sync to a particular computer which is a great option if you'd like to free up disk space.

You can use Selective Sync by following the steps in this Help Center article:

https://www.dropbox.com/help/syncing-uploads/selective-sync-overview

More information

By default, all folders in Dropbox automatically sync to any computer that's linked to your Dropbox account. If you'd like to prevent a folder from syncing to your computer, un-check the box next to the folder's name. Any folders you deselect will stop syncing to your hard drive, but will still be available through the website and on any other computer linked to your Dropbox account.

If you decide that you need the deselected folders back on your computer, go into your Selective Sync settings and check the box next to the folder's name. Dropbox will then sync the updated folder to your computer again.

I hope this information helps and please let me know how it goes!

Re: When can i delete synced files from my harddrive

But it's still not clear to me just how to create more space on my hard drive.

There's no syncing going on now. And, I think, the window that opens when I click on my DropBox icon shows all the files presently synced.

Where can I go to delete files already uploaded and synced? i.e., just how do I use DB to free up space on my hard drive (which I'm being told by a pop-up is "almost full")?

Thanks

If those files have been successfully uploaded to your Dropbox account (which you'll be able to verify through our website at dropbox.com or your Events page) you should be safe to delete them from their original locations on your computer's hard drive.

If that's what you did and still getting the same error about your hard drive's space, I'd suggest taking a look at my previous response - specifically the information about our selective sync feature.

Let me know if I'm missing anything here @bookman!
