Dropbox ate my desktop and ability to download files

Dropbox ate my desktop and ability to download files. I took out checks on back-up function during installation,  but looks like it still messed up with my right or something.

Then I delete dropbox, but the problem stays. Please help me to fix that.

Hey @pogich, welcome to the Dropbox Community.

Can you please clarify what happened and what you mean by saying that Dropbox ate your desktop?

Do you mean that Dropbox filled up your hard drive space?

Or are you missing your desktop files, even after disabling backup?

Any additional info or screenshots that would better explain the issue, would be really appreciated.

Thanks!

Hey @Hannah, thank you for reply.

I mean that I don't have access to my Desktop and Downloads folders. When I try to open them - I get notifications that

"The operation can’t be completed because the original item for “Desktop” can’t be found.".

During installation, Dropbox asked me if I wanted to back up these folders, I took out checks since I didn't need that.

So DB didn't back them up, so they didn't backed-up, I don't have them in my DB storage, but at the same moment, I lost access to them on my computer.

Hi @pogich, are you able to see Documents, Desktop and Downloads only in Dropbox or in the original paths on your device?

Also, do you have a Mac or a Windows device?

Hey Megan. thanks for reply.

I have Mac. I am not able to see Desktop and Downloads in Dropbox. I am not able to see this folder on my computer either.

Thanks for the additional info, @pogich.

Are you perhaps able to see your desktop folders here?

Thanks for the screenshot, @pogich.

I understand that you didn't enable backup, but if you follow the steps here to disable it, what do you see in the Backups tab in the preferences? Can you send us a screenshot of that too?

Looks like I'm not able to Adjust settings or Disable backup since my back-up switched off.

Here is the screenshot of my Manage backup tab.Screenshot 2023-05-04 at 01.43.41.png

Thanks for checking that, @pogich.

Since you have the Dropbox app installed, can you follow these steps, to revert your desktop folders back to their original locations?

  1. Click the Dropbox icon in your menu bar.
  2. Click your profile picture or initials.
  3. Click Preferences.
  4. Click the Accounts tab.
  5. Press the Option key and at the same time click the Reset OS folders locations button.
