I keep getting the message that my Dropbox is full when I haven't yet used any space!

Dropbox doesn't enable this feature on its own. You either went into Preferences and enabled it manually, or clicked too fast through the process and enabled it when you installed Dropbox (if you just accepted all the defaults, you enabled it).

I didn't ask Dropbox to back up my files. Why is it doing so and how can I stop it from backing up my files?

I was able to stop Dropbox from backing up my files, but that didn't solve the problem of removing the files from Dropbox that had already been backed up. Rather than deal with the latter problem, I decided to uninstall Dropbox. I can always reinstall it if I have a need for it in the future.
