Smart Sync automatically switches to local

Smart Sync seems to automatically change the status of Microsoft Excel and Word files to "local", even when they aren't opened. I'm assuming this is because Word & Excel must search and link to recently opened files when they are started, even if those files aren't opened or "Open Recent Files" isn't accessed. Is anyone else having this issue?

Re: Smart Sync automatically switches to local

Hi all,

Thanks for the tickets and for raising this issue. I spoke to our team and this is what they recommended:

- Temporarily quit or disable applications systematically until you see that the issue is resolved.

The last application that you closed when the issue no longer occurred may be the one performing this action.

If the application that is converting these online-only files to local files is an antivirus application, please let us know the name and version so I can pass this on to them.

Thank you!

Re: Smart Sync automatically switches to local

Hey @Matt S.12

I think you’re on the right track here, but I don’t know that it’s Office that’s bringing these files back to local. I’ve just tried to duplicate this on a Mac, and some office files behaved this way, while others didn’t. Our article about this mentions checking for other applications that are accessing these files for some reason. Backup apps and security software may be a good place to start.

Have a look, and let me know.
Thanks!

Re: Smart Sync automatically switches to local

Thanks Sanchez. I can only recreate the issue with Microsoft Word currently, the only problem being that I can't disable the "Open Recent" feature in my 2016 Mac version of Word. So might be back to the drawing board with this one. Thanks for your help in testing it out!

Hey @Matt S.12

I’m sorry I couldn’t be more helpful here. If you don’t mind, could you submit a support ticket so that one of our agents can take a look at this? At the very least, they can forward your case to our specialist team for review.

It’s funny how these things work sometimes. I recently had a Windows 7 computer that was exhibiting similar behavior with Smart Sync. Not specific to Office files, but some things wouldn’t stay smart synced. What ended up fixing my issue was an update to the Windows operating system! I don’t expect that something like this would solve your issue. I’m just suggesting that the culprit can be something that’s not directly related to the apps we use, and can be easily overlooked.

Have a great weekend winking face

Re: Smart Sync automatically switches to local

I solved this problem by enable the real-time protection off my Avira Virus Scanner. Than I took the prozess "Dropbox.exe" as exception in the settings, enable real-time protection again and it works.

Please excuse my bad english.

Good work! Unfortunately I'm on a Mac and am not running anti-virus, so I don't think this is my issue.

Re: Smart Sync automatically switches to local

Hi @JordanWilson, unfortunately no I haven't found anything more. I will post a support ticket, but otherwise I'm a bit stuck here.

I know in older versions of Word for Mac, you could disable the "Open recent" feature, which I feel might help with my problem. But in my 2016 version, I'm unable to disable the feature, so I think everytime I open Word or Excel, it automatically makes some sort of connection to all recent files, which downloads them to local :(

Re: Smart Sync automatically switches to local

I think we experiencing the same issue. I'm also on a mac, no antivirus etc and what the same thing is happening to me with basically every file I've tested (a lot of adobe/microsoft files). Every time I open a single file within a folder, every other file will begin to automatically download to Local off of Online Only. I don't know if it's necessarily the "open recent" feature because it will download every file in that folder - even ones that haven't been opened for years. I've reached out to Dropbox but didn't get a ton back and no one really has any direction to a solution. But it's super frustrating!
