When is a license consumed?

I'm doing some research for our recent acquisition of dropbox as a file sharing solution.  Trying to find info on when exactly a license is consumed.

So far I know for sure that Active and Suspended members consume a license.  I also know that deleted members consume a license.  What about the the invited member status?  are there any other statuses that i'm missing in this discussion?

Hey there @KomperdaJ82  - how are you today?

To cut things short, you are correct. Active and suspended users take up licenses on Dropbox for Business Teams plans.

Invited members also take up licenses to enable the users' onboarding. These will show as pending until they accept the invite to join the team. 

Deleting members frees up the license they held immediately. 

In case you need to cancel a pending invitation to your Dropbox Business team, please follow these steps:

  • Login to your admin account at
  • Click on ‘Admin Console’ on the bottom left
  • Choose ‘Members’ on the left, or go to
  • Sort by ‘Invited’ at the top right of the page
  • Locate the pending invitation for the user that you wish to remove from your team
  • Click the gear to the right of the user’s name
  • Select 'Suspend or delete user'

Once the pending invitation has been removed, it will release the license that it held, and you will be able to invite another with that license.
