Unable to link new computer to Dropbox and complete installation

I have followed the instructions to download Dropbox onto a new laptop from the website ("get the desktop app") but all that is downloading are two documents. one entitled "Gettintg started with Dropbox Paper" Internet Shortcut, and one entitled "Getting started with Dropbox" a PDF File.  This latter file merely takes me back to the link to download the App which is where I started.  I still have Dropbox via the website and on my tablet and smartphone, but would find it useful to have the desktop App on my new laptop.

You've installed the application, signed in, and only see those two files in the Dropbox folder? If so, it sounds like you've created a new account instead of signing into an existing account.

Each Dropbox account is linked to a unique email address. Make sure you've signed in to Dropbox using the same email address that you used to sign-in on your tablet and the website.

Thanks Rich, but having checked the account on the website and my tablet/smartphone Apps they're all the same account details, even down to the same avatar.

On your computer, click the Dropbox icon in your system tray (Windows) or menu bar (Mac). When the menu appears, click the globe icon at the top-right.

The Dropbox website will open and automatically sign you in using the account linked to your computer. When the page opens, click Files on the left side of the page. Do you see your files, or just the two "Getting started..." files?

Hey there, it does sound like you’ve created a brand new account instead of linking to an existing account.

If your account on the phone has the correct details, uninstall the desktop app, and then try these steps to automatically link that account onto your Dropbox desktop application.

It is; still somewhat confusing as the website was telling me I was logged in at this address all along, but we got there in the end.
