Moving folder into a folder creates error "Couldn't move 1 item [Folder Name]"

Moving folder into a folder creates error "Couldn't move 1 item [Folder Name]"

Hello -

I am attempting to move all of my files from one account to another, so I am trying to follow the instructions via link below.

https://help.dropbox.com/organize/move-files-between-accounts

However, I am stuck on step 3. I am trying to consolidate all of my folders into a single folder so that I can then share it with my other account.  When I try to drag and drop one folder into another, I get an error stating "Couldn't move 1 item into [Folder Name]."

This error occurs in the dropbox online view and is on a Business Account.

Does anyone know why this error is happening and how I can resolve?

Thanks for your help.

Since you have already shared the folder, on the non-team member account you can simply create another folder with the same name elsewhere, and then drag the contents of the shared folder into the new private folder. Does this generate the same error?

Hi @JeffCEO, thanks for posting today!

Is the file or folder part of a shared folder or a team folder?

Are you able to copy the files instead of moving them?

Keep me posted!

I believe they are team folders.

I need to move ~0.5 TB of data so not sure copying is an option.

Hey @JeffCEO - sorry to jump in here, but could you try clearing your browser's cache or using another browser and let us know if you get the same results?

Also, have you tried doing the move ins smaller batches perhaps?

I tried clearing browser cache but that did not resolve the issue.

I'm moving subfolders so it's already in smaller batches.  Making it smaller than the subfolders are already would force me to change the folder structure, which I don't want to have to do.

I also tried using a different browser.  I've tried both Chrome and Safari.

It won't be possible to move team folders into another shared folder.

Are you able to have all the files and folders sync normally onto your computer, if you have enough space?

No, I don't have enough space to do that.

Is there a way to change the team folder to a non-team folder?

No, there isn't a method to convert a team folder to a private or shared folder.

You ca try sharing the team folder with a non-team member (i.e., the other account you're trying to move to) to see if this helps, or copy the team folder into your personal folder.

I've already shared the team folder with the non-team member account.  I see the shared folder in that non-team account.  But when I try to drag that folder into another folder, I get the same error.

How do I copy the folder once I have it shared with the non-team account?

I need to somehow make a copy so that after I'm done with the process, I can delete the folders from the original business/team account.
