The upcoming tagging feature looks interesting. Will Dropbox read already existing Tags in files (such as IPCT / Adobe XMP Keywords in graphics files) – or is the tagging feature an additional layer which only lives in the Dropbox?
We store ten thousands of properly tagged files in Dropbox, but never could access this data in App or Browser. It would be huge if you finally made this happen – the mentioned standards are open, established for many years and used worldwide.
I've seen that Tags already got rolled out. As I feared, this is a feature that ignores existing tags in files. The consequence of this approach is that tags assigned in Dropbox can only be used within Dropbox (browser or app). What an unnecessary limitation. 😞
The beauty in Tags – in proper implementation – is, that they are never lost! Yours are by definition trapped inside the Dropbox ecosystem.
You guys could have used the same simple GUI. Users, however, from the first second would profit from their pre-existing categorization in their graphics assets. They could add new Tags to their Dropbox assets from everywhere... Inside the Browser, from your Apps, or using Finder, Windows Explorer and countless DAM programs. And these Tags were still perfectly intact, when moving assets outside of Dropbox. You could still add custom features which aren't supported elsewhere – such as Tags on Folders.
Establishing a proprietary and isolated system, however, ignores how people work.
