Dropbox Backup
1098 TopicsFile corrupted and cannot be restored from the version history.
I have a file stored in Dropbox that is corrupted, both locally and in the cloud, so I tried to retrieve an older version from the version history to minimize the loss. However, when I accessed the version history of this file, Dropbox encountered a 400 error and couldn't be accessed. What should I do to at least retrieve the older version of the file? Thank you.Solved25Views0likes3CommentsMacOS: desktop folders are now aliases - How can I switch back?
So my Desktop, Documents, and Downloads folders are no longer folders, but rather aliases to these folders within the dropbox folder. I understand that this is because at some point they were set to be backed up by dropbox. Unfortunately this is completely breaking when I try to use migration assistant to move to a new machine. Not everything is copied over - a bunch of these folders are missing - and the aliases themselves are broken. I want to go back to these folders being real folders and no longer aliases so that I can do the migration. Is it as simple as turning off backups in Dropbox? Will it then move these folders back to where they are supposed to be? Will that delete the backed up files on Dropbox because they have now been removed from the backups? I've read this: "https://help.dropbox.com/organize/delete-dropbox-backup" but it just talks about deleting a backup. I don't want my files deleted. I just want them back to where they belong. I will be doing a time-machine backup before I make any changes to make sure I get everything. But I would also love it if the migration assistant just worked out of the box. Bonus question: I have been reading that Dropbox is changing how it works on MacOS... that there is a "new way" of managing files that would change the above behavior. It would be storing data in ~/Library/CloudStorage. Is this something I should change to be using? If so, how? And what are the consequences of making this change? I've read this: "https://help.dropbox.com/installs/dropbox-for-macos-support" but it is very technical and does not really tell me what the difference is for an end user - i.e. where will my files be stored? How is it different than the way Dropbox worked before from an end user perspective. Thanks!Solved28Views0likes3CommentsBackup is not saving the files from the folders I selected
I've installed dropbox yesterday, been trying to setup the backup service. Followed all the steps, but it seems to not be working correctly, it takes a looong time for it to finally finish the backup, if it'll finish at all, even though it's just a 1,47gb backup. There immediately comes in the main problem, i've selected my docs, pictures and videos to be saved with the backup, but it ain't doing that. Any clue on how to fix this? Since this is pretty annoying, paying for nothing atm.15Views0likes1CommentHow can I back up an external hard drive on different computers?
Hi, Can I backup an external hard drive on different computers signed in to the same account? I BackedUp my external hd initially on computer 1. I just tried to BackUp on computer 2 signed into the same account, but the Manage Backup page asks to Sign on to the device? I have the options of Adding a Backup and that original external drive is there, but this creates a new backup. Am I missing something? ThanksSolved60Views0likes5CommentsDropbox backup does not recognize my 2nd and 3rd internal hard drives.
I am trying to backup some folders from my two data hard drives installed internally on my Windows 11 computer. Dropbox isn't allowing me to choose additional hard drives within my computer, only the HDD which is used for installed programs only, no data such as documents, pictures, music, videos, project data, etc. (that choice box is grayed out) This makes backing up the folders that regularly need to be backed up impossible and makes the backup feature useless for me. Any tips on solving this mystery?141Views0likes4CommentsI see a grey X next to my Windows files and they can't be opened after disabling computer backup
Hello! I used to use the backup feature of Dropbox for my computer. Notably, this included my Documents folder (on Windows 10). At some point I turned off the backup feature because I thought I didn't need it any more. I thought this would stop the integration with my computer gracefully, but it seems that now many of my files in my Documents folder are no longer accessible, as if they were made online-only (but there is no longer an online version backing them). Some screenshots attached. The problem files appear with a grey X on the bottom left of the icon. If I try to open them, I get failure and an error message sometimes depending on the program trying to open it. I do not have OneDrive, which is the usual cause I see online for the grey Xs. How can I get my files working again? grey Xs on files that cannot be openedgrey Xs on files that cannot be opened what happens if I try to open a text file with an X using notepad++what happens if I try to open a text file with an X using notepad++8.6KViews0likes12CommentsDropbox shows 305% usage due to backup, but I don't see any files being backed up.
Dropbox currently shows 305% usage, when I check the storage it shows that everything (~80GB) is stored in Backup. When I open Backup application, however, it shows Size: 0 bytes, Number of files: 0. An older thread (https://www.dropboxforum.com/discussions/101001016/why-can-i-only-back-up-specific-folders/612837 ) (replies are turned off) said: I just started using the back up feature in Dropbox but it seems to only back up 3 folders: DOWNLOADS, DESKTOP & DOCUMENTS. I don't keep important stuff in any of these. How do I select my 2 most important folders? It doesn't seem to let me choose. So far I have only seen answers confirming that is true, and tough luck - you are stuck with this maddeningly limited functionality. I just wanted to say that there is a great solution, but it does require a higher learning curve. It is called rclone (https://rclone.org/dropbox/ ) - free and Open Source software designed to integrate as many different cloud storage solutions as possible, and enable you to copy between them, and also back and forth with any folder on your computer that you so choose. Perfect! The downside is the learning curve as by default, you need to type commands into a command line to use it (I've created script files to do that work on a monthly basis, so I don't manually type in any commands any more). BUT there are multiple GUI's (Graphical User Interfaces) for rclone, including one in beta from the rclone team themselves - this provides a 'point and click' interface that is easier to use. I haven't tried any of the GUI's so I can't recommend any, but I'd say it is well worth a shot!81Views0likes2CommentsMac backup 0% complete, 'Backup now' is grey, says will complete in 1 sec but no movement.
I noticed Dropbox Backup today, looks good for my needs as a long time solo user w/ a 2TB account. Selected documents and music folders in my Mac user account, all looked OK then....nothing, no movement. Stuck at 0% even though it says updating 2,367 files and 1 sec remaining. Nothing, nada. I've rebooted, removed the external drive I wanted to also backup, re-installed Dropbox, no other cloud service-connected files are present in anything I want to backup, tried automatic backups on and off....but nothing. The 'Backup now' is also greyed out whatever I do. I've looked at various Db help pages but nothing. Any ideas appreciated. Also why no Backup label? Hi everyone, I'm using Dropbox Backup and I would like to understand how version control works. Is it possible to limit the number of backup versions per file? For example, can I set Dropbox to keep only the 10 most recent versions of a file, automatically deleting the oldest one when a new version is created? Alternatively, do I need to manually delete old versions? Is there an option for automatic deletion based on the age of a version (e.g. after a certain number of days)? Thanks in advance for your help!48Views0likes3Comments
