It isn't currently possible for API apps to have access to a single shared folder. 

API apps can only be configured with one of the following permission types:

  • Full Dropbox access: The app can access all files and folders in a user’s Dropbox.
  • App Folder access: The app is limited to a dedicated folder within the user’s Dropbox that’s created specifically for that app.

That said, I'll pass this along as a feature request. I can't promise if or when that might be implemented though.
