Add .dropboxignore directory to exclude folders without using selective sync
Please please please can you add a feature that allows folders to be excluded from the Dropbox account (on windows and mac). For sure I'm not the first person to request this, but I'm yet to find a g...

Why won't Dropbox add a feature where you could automatically ignore files by name? I realize that this is a little bit of a niche feature, probably only needed by power users, but it would clearly be trivial to implement, and I've seen many users asking for this feature.

You get the idea, several pages of Google results with people asking for a feature that would take probably less than a week for an engineer to implement.

Wouldn't be great to have a .droppoxignore file that works as the .gitignore file?

I'd also like to have alternative ways of ignoring files/folders from Dropbox sync. Waiting for Mac desktop client to sync all folders already takes minutes and I imagine it will only get worst as the filesystem grows.

It does more than just that. It would also delete the content of folders from your computer. Use with caution!
On the contrary, it won't delete anything from Dropbox servers. Hence your node_modules would remain synced on other computers ad infinitum.
In other words, `dropbox exclude` does not solve the problem.

On Linux Dropbox has a client (`dropbox`) and a deamon (`dropboxd`).
The client has the `exclude` command, which you can use to exclude directories. E.g. to exclude node_modules from Dropbox you can enter `dropbox exclude add ./node_modules`
`dropbox help exclude` will print the help information:
dropbox exclude [list]
dropbox exclude add [DIRECTORY] [DIRECTORY] ...
dropbox exclude remove [DIRECTORY] [DIRECTORY] ...
"list" prints a list of directories currently excluded from syncing.
"add" adds one or more directories to the exclusion list, then resynchronizes Dropbox.
"remove" removes one or more directories from the exclusion list, then resynchronizes Dropbox.
With no arguments, executes "list".
Any specified path must be within Dropbox. - Gavin G.410 years agoNew member | Level 1

I would love this! I really want to be able to ignore all the node_modules directories in all the node projects I sync with dropbox, sync's so many files that I really don't need.
