Adding my vote for this. We understand that Dropbox is doing this because they are a public company that needs to show growth on quarterly earnings calls. But annoying paying customers by offering a subpar experience that could only be justified for free users is not going to help.
Just make the sharing experience great and people who are introduced to Dropbox will naturally flow to the product. The way Dropbox is doing things today is just alienating existing and potential customers, because who do you think would want to pay for Dropbox just to offer the same subpar experience to their clients/collaborators/partners where instead of getting to the files that were shared they are nagged to create an account?
The product managers at Dropbox need to wake up. We all understand their motives for implementing this dark pattern, but they need to come up with an experience that wins the hearts of people exposed to Dropbox for the first time, not alienate their existing paying users.
Hope this helps,
Andrew (DBoxTips)
P.S. I am a volunteer on the Dropbox forums, freely and happily sharing know-how with other users, not affiliated with Dropbox in any way.
