Computer Backup
116 TopicsI plugged an external drive to my computer, but it's backing up 0% to Dropbox
I've recently signed up with Dropbox Backup and added my external hard drive. I enabled backup for this drive, and selected 'Backup Now' rather than waiting for it to schedule a backup at 9am tomorrow morning. Since doing so the drive remains at 90-100% usage, but not a single file has been uploaded in over 4 hours. It shows 0 bytes transferred in the Dropbox app. How do I get it to do it's job and actually start the backup?1.2KViews1like14CommentsSyncing Documents and Downloads folders across multiple macOS devices
I have used Dropbox for years to sync the Documents and Downloads folders of my home, office, and travel Macs (i.e., I can work on any of the three machines at anytime and they are all synced). Last year, I discovered that I heed to use symlinks to do this on a new office machine and so far, it seems to be working. Today I am setting up a new MacMini at home and am trying to figure out how to set up syncing again. I installed Dropbox and files were added to the new Mac, but the Dropbox folder is in my user library, and an alias (or symlink) to my Dropbox appears in my user folder. Clearly something has changed in Sequoia compared with earlier OSs. Can someone share the terminal code that I need to replace the Documents folder on my new Mac with a symlink pointing to the Documents folder in Dropbox?131Views0likes5CommentsI see a grey X next to my Windows files and they can't be opened after disabling computer backup
Hello! I used to use the backup feature of Dropbox for my computer. Notably, this included my Documents folder (on Windows 10). At some point I turned off the backup feature because I thought I didn't need it any more. I thought this would stop the integration with my computer gracefully, but it seems that now many of my files in my Documents folder are no longer accessible, as if they were made online-only (but there is no longer an online version backing them). Some screenshots attached. The problem files appear with a grey X on the bottom left of the icon. If I try to open them, I get failure and an error message sometimes depending on the program trying to open it. I do not have OneDrive, which is the usual cause I see online for the grey Xs. How can I get my files working again? grey Xs on files that cannot be openedgrey Xs on files that cannot be opened what happens if I try to open a text file with an X using notepad++what happens if I try to open a text file with an X using notepad++9KViews0likes12CommentsUpload versus back-up?
I know the difference between uploading a file and backing up one. But....when I upload a folder from my desktop into Dropbox it is still present on my desktop. The same is true when I backup a folder. This makes me wonder about the difference between the two.Solved346Views0likes8CommentsDropbox External Drive Backup - Changing Computers
I’ve just found out when you change Laptop / Desktop you can’t continue to use the same external hard drive with Dropbox Backup. This is absolute madness. If you want to continue to use that hard drive with Dropbox Backup you have to re upload the full HD. I have 2TB used on a 4TB external SSD and I’ve just changed to a new MacBook. I’m having to spend three days uploading / backing-up all my data again just to continue to use that same drive with the new device. What a waste of energy, electricity, data and bandwidth. For no reason. My old backup is sitting there in my account with all the same data and I just have to re-upload 2TB of the exact same files for no reason other than Dropbox can’t set up a way to re-link an external hard drive on on a new system. I can’t believe this is the current state of affairs for this service.1.1KViews3likes15CommentsI'm trying to back up 100GB of files to Dropbox, but it's super slow.
Hi there, I just started using Dropbox to backup 100 Gb of an external drive on the Cloud plus a few Gb from the system drive. I'm on Macbook & Sonoma 14.7.2 + Dropbox Desktop App. I've noticed that sometime the uploading process is not moving...or super slow for like hours, an entire night. Then suddenly in 2 hours it uploads 20% of the whole folder. Then again...super slow progress or no progress for hours, even if it indicates that is syncing. My connection is good, I'm also uploading parallel backups on Google Drive without problems. I tried stopping and resuming the sync without any significant effect. Since I'm going to use Dropbox mainly to backup, I need to know if this is a standard behaviour, a kinda limitation on the bandwidth or if not, cause when you have to upload some big amount of data, wasting one night of upload with no progress at all it's not cool. I have a Dropbox subscription. My devices are synced (phone and PC). I bought a Sandisk Extreme Portable SSD and connected it to the PC. I Backed up the PC to the SSD throughout Dropbox Backup. I was expecting to be able to open files and folders offline in the SSD, but this doesn't happened. I am almost sure I didn't understand the processes. I know that with a simple USB device I can reach files offline when working on the PC. So I will greatly appreciate to be tutored for 2 things. How to backup the PC to the SSD with Dropbox; How to make the SSD available as the PC to open files and folder. In the PC I have only a litle space, less than 50G free, and in the SSD I have 4T. So I want it to be the place containing offline Dropbox Files and Folder. I tried to be clear. Obiously I am poorly skilled in Superuser.104Views0likes1CommentPhotoshop won't Save for Web unless Dropbox Desktop & Documents backup disabled
This issue affects Adobe Photoshop and the Dropbox backup features on Mac Big Sur. When the Desktop and Documents are selected as Personal backup folders, it seems to mess up the Adobe permissions, so that the Save for Web option in Photoshop doesn't work. Only when you deselect the Desktop and Documents backup options do the permissions reset. Not sure if this is a Dropbox problem or Adobe problem. I found the solution in the Adobe forums here: https://community.adobe.com/t5/photoshop-ecosystem-discussions/p-save-for-web-error-a-write-permissions-error-has-occurred-photoshop-22-1-1/m-p/11747734 Would be good if we could fix this so I can continue to back up my Desktop and Documents folders.6.2KViews2likes9CommentsBackup folder name change
Hello! I have 2 macs, one personal and one for work. Both had backup enabled and when I went online, I saw both computers' backup directories. The directories were both in the format of "My Mac (computername)" However, recently I disabled the Dropbox backup on my work laptop because I didn't think it would be wise to backup my work stuff to Dropbox. But I was subsequently told it was OK, so I re-enabled the backup. While everything was uploaded to Dropbox just fine, the name of the work laptop backup directory is now simply "Mac (2)". I would like to rename the folder to the "My Mac" format I previously had, but it is not letting me rename the folder. Any assistance would be great. Thanks in advance.Solved10KViews13likes43Comments
