Shared Links
31 TopicsOpen shared links directly in native app
A few years have passed since this request and as a business this would save us allot of time and irritation. As a company we share daily hundreds of links to files via Microsoft Teams with each other. Now the situation is as follow: 1 link is shared 2 team member clicks on the link 3 browser opens the link to the file 4 user clicks on 'open in dropbox' button Ideal situation would be that admins and users have a File open preference, where links to files can directly open in the native apps: 1 link is shared 2 team member clicks on it and the file is synced and opened in the native app Microsoft Teams has a great solution to this problem for Office-applications, called File open preference, see screenshot. It would be great if Dropbox could also build this feature in it's Dropbox-apps.8.2KViews18likes6CommentsDefault Share Option should be "View" not "Edit"
Hello, I am a Dropbox business admin that shares a lot of links with people outside of my organization. I'm not sure when it happened but as some point the default for sharing switched from "View" to "Edit". When you click the "Copy Link" button, it creates an edit link, not a view link. When you click the three dots, then go "Share with Dropbox", and the pop up window appears, the default is "can edit". Furthermore, in the dropbox app (Finder on Mac), the "Copy Dropbox Link" option creates an edit link. I'm sure I'm not the only one who does not want random people being able to upload to my dropbox. To be sure, I do not want to get rid of "Edit", but making it the default seems an odd choice. This means that even the most diligent of user (myself) accidentally sends Edit links. People who are not diligent send them exclusively. Thank you!16KViews32likes34CommentsPersistent Shared Links (Regardless of the status of the user who created the link)
Our organization is approximately 45 people. Among other many other uses, we use Dropbox to share links with one another. This helps us locate documents in Windows File Explorer (regardless of the local path on a given machine) and sometimes to support needs on projects. Something we learned the hard way recently is that Dropbox links only last as long as the user who created them. This was extremely disappointing to learn. We were building a database for a project that had thousands of person-hours in it. Crucially, this database needs to live on for our client beyond our involvement. Each row referred to a location on our shared drive where an asset was located. As there are storage limitations within the database platform we were using (AirTable), it made sense to share a link to the location on Dropbox where it was stored. Bonus points that we could control access to that asset on Dropbox's side, rather than having to filter out through access controls within the database. This worked well until we noticed some links were leading to errors we had never seen before. We troubleshooted for some time until we realized all of the broken links were created by users who were no longer with our company. On a project like this, most of the grunt-work was done by temporary interns. This led us to the realization that Dropbox is ill-suited to this task because links are related only to the user, not to the organization paying for the subscription. We have now had to ask our client for a scope change to bring on a different cloud software because of this strange (and frustrating) behaviour. We are testing Google Drive, Box, and One Drive. If any of these platforms allow persistent links, we will be seriously considering moving our entire organization over. Shared links in shared drives should persist indefinitely (or as long as the organization exists and is paying for a dropbox subscription).1.3KViews0likes6CommentsShared link bandwidth monitor for Dropbox users to prevent breaking bandwidth limits
A tool designed to monitor real-time bandwidth usage for Dropbox users, aimed at preventing the maximum limit of 1TB from being reached. This solution sends customizable alerts when bandwidth consumption reaches critical thresholds (e.g., 75%, 90%) and provides detailed daily or weekly reports. This way, users can proactively manage their service usage, ensuring continuous access without interruptions due to exceeding the bandwidth limit.117Views0likes2CommentsUser restrictions on bulk deletion or moving
It would be great if it were possible to set a user so they cannot perform bulk deletions or moves of files. One of the users, who does not have admin rights, accidentally moved a folder with 350,000 files. As a result, we lost the functionality of the links when returning the folder back. It would therefore be great if some users could be restricted so that it is not possible to move or delete files beyond a certain quota.239Views2likes3CommentsShare a a file directly from Dropbox using Replay features
If you have the Replay add on, I think you should have the ability to send "share via Replay" links from a file in dropbox. When using this option the file would be available in Replay automatically and sync with that file in dropbox for comments/changes. Versions could be uploaded into the same folder with a naming scheme. Bottom line, everything should be do-able within the dropbox app - everything from setting up folders, workspaces, versions, etc... leaving replay for the viewer experience, comments, and other forms of communication about the file. All file upload/download/versions/links should be integrated into Dropbox, so that file management can be done from the Dropbox side1.2KViews1like4CommentsCan we have an option to have raw=1 as default for shared links?
When I make a web link to Dropbox content I get dl=0 as default. Please create an option to let me set my account to default to creating web links with raw=1. Extensive testing across various platforms and browsers shows me that raw=1 is much more convenient for most recipients. After all, a web link is explicitly most useful for sharing with people who might not already be using Dropbox.472Views0likes3CommentsMake the folders in shared links appear in grid view by default.
It would be more viewer-friendly if the folders and their files were displayed more like actual folders and files, i.e. the Grid View. The same information is displayed but the list view is like File Manager and looks more technical which is OK if the only people who are going to access it are fellow workers, but I'm sending clients and customers to my folder and I would like the option to have it look better. I would even consider moving from Free to Basic to improve my customer's experience.462Views0likes6Comments
