Feedback on time estimates

I saw one post here where a Dropbox associate responded saying that the time estimate is based on the current download speed, but even if that is the case, it doesn't answer the question, because the estimate seems to be based on some "chunk" of the total files being transferred that is constantly changing to the point where the size of the files, AND the transfer speed are both completely untethered to what is actually happening, making the estimate worse than useless. Why even include a time estimate if it is completely untethered to
1) the actual average download speed
2) the total number of files
3) the total file sizes

It is a complete waste of system resources to be constantly plugging with this useless calculation
