Privacy question on shared links

I realize that when I share a file via a link, for example a demo file on a forum, the name of the owner is shown to anyone that use the link, in the form of a message like

"Joe Smith shared the file abcd.xyz with you"

or

"You received abcd.xyz from Joe Smith"

or

"Register to Dropbox to cooperate with Joe Smith on abcd.xyz and obtain 2GB for your files"

I am on the Bropbox basic free plan.

Is there any option to prevent the information about the owner to be displayed?

Thank you

Anthony

  • Hi Anthony47, thanks for messaging the Community.

The name on the shared link is used to identify the person who shared the link for those users who are expecting a link from a certain person or organization. This is primarily for users to not ignore shared links from anonymous users.

Currently, there isn't an option to disable this feature.

If you have any further queries, feel free to message back.

Thank you Jay for your message

    I understand...

However, if that is a safety measure, it should be noted that the owner name is not always displayed, as can be seen on the attached images

    [Removed as per Community Guidelines]

I didn’t mention that in my initial message because I had not a clear understanding of when it is and when it is not displayed. Apparently it is not displayed if I click on the link; but it is displayed if I COPY the link and paste it into the address bar of the browser

See the link on this forum post, for example: http://www.pc-facile.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=26&t=113019&p=664471#p664471

    Thanks again

    Anthony

We're not able to view those images here. Could you try attaching them directly to your post, or by copying and pasting the image directly into your next reply?

Ok (even I didn't understand which rule forbids attaching links to images)

Let me try using "Insert Photos"

Owner info are visible in the first image; is not visible in the second one

In the first image, it looks like this is a shared link when you're not signed into the same Dropbox account (namely, as an anonymous user), and the second is, since it's giving you options on how to open the file itself, instead of adding it to your own account.

I started from the link published in this message: http://www.pc-facile.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=26&t=113019&p=664471#p664471

(an excel file that I did share)

By clicking on the link I see the following:

1: this behaviour demonstrate that my feeling that by clicking on the link the owner information is not displayed  is wrong

2: the option on the right should demonstrate that I am not logged in to my Dropbox account

I am happy with the information I received, I shall be glad to provide more info if you deem that the overall situation deserves an investigation

    Thank you for your time
