Out of space even after deleting files
I have deleted so many files and folders and my storage space has not changed. In searching I've noticed this issue stems back about 8 years but there seems to be so much confusion around it. Can som...

I had to delete backups and then when I delete other files logout and back in, then it shows the freed space. Thank you!

Really? Not one person in all my research has been successful in getting space to free up after deleting. It even says on Dropbox's help site that deleting won't free up space.

3 years agoHi jillspen. Can you please send me a screenshot of what you see here? How much data did you approximately delete from your Dropbox account?
Also, where did you see exactly that deleting files from your Dropbox account doesn’t free up space?
Thanks!

Hello, I deleted several folders, did research and also found this from Dropbox help:

Thanks for this screenshot, jillspen!
The point you’ve highlighted means exactly that deleted files/folders don’t take up space from your Dropbox account, so it’s not necessary to permanently delete them, since they should already not be taking up any space (like Rich also mentioned above).
Can you also send me a screenshot of what you see here? How much space was taken on your Dropbox account, before you deleted the folders you mention?

Thank you for replying. When I looked at my space, it said I had used 1.8gb out of 2gb. I had then deleted as many actual files, folders, and pictures as I could, and it STILL says 1.8gb. I definitely deleted some significantly large files. This is what I don't understand. I delete the files, and NO space is freed up. It doesn't make sense.
Thank you!

Hi jillspen, can you also look into whether you have any shared folders that might be taking up your space?
You can check this in the plan tab of your account settings. Or perhaps you have any backup enabled.
Let me know what you find.

No shared folders. Not doing anything fancy other than being able to access documents from phone and laptop. Thanks.

There is something under Backups....what does that do? Backing up add'l folders, etc to Dropbox?
Thanks!

It's only 500mg. Why didn't deleting large files and folders not free up space? It's perpetually stuck at 1.8GB out of 2GB. This is really aggravating.
Thanks.
- jillspen3 years agoHelpful | Level 6I never enabled it. Why is it there? What will it delete and why won't deleting other files and folders not free up space???
Thank you. - Hannah3 years ago

Hey jillspen, I'd suggest taking a look at this page. This should show you any backups you might have.
If you do not want these files to be backed up, you can delete the backup, by following these steps.
And I would also suggest following these steps, to check how much space each of your files is taking up, so that you can see if there's a specific one that's filling up your space.

I can't find the size anywhere on my regular files. But no one is answering the ultimate question....why is deleting files NOT freeing up space?? What is the backup section for? (Again, no answer to what deleting that does.) If I delete that, isn't that getting rid of my disaster recovery? Even though Dropbox is cloud-based...what happens when I delete my backups?
Thank you.
