Re: Dropbox freezes and crashes when I navigate in my Dropbox folder within File explorer.
Few days ago i started to fell that my Windows explorer began to work slow, like i need to wait while it is loading quick menu, when i press right click on file to rar it, i need to wait 5 seconds before menu opens, after a restart, all fine for random time, 10-20 mins then again, all stuck. (PC is half year old, work pc, i7-12700k, 32 ram, win 10, 2 SSD 2 tb each(MSI + ADATA), i thought maybe a virus, bought kasperskiy antivirus, it didnt help, nothing was found. So i thought maybe ssd is failing, i checked all ssd as possible, all fine. So i made an update to win 11....... Something that i didnt want to do, but i did, i thought maybe some windows fail. But it didnt help too. Then suddenly i saw my dropbox app was syncing something and for too long time, so i made it pause syncing, it didnt say to to me that sync is paused till some time like usual, just stuck on writing pausing. So i turned off dropbox and Win Explorer started to run fine. So i tested it a little more and this is what i have now, after every first dropbox sync, nvm what it is, win explorer stuck(i tried to delete 400 gb, the speed of delete is 1 FILE PER SECOND!!!!!!! when normal speed is close to 2000), i pause dropbox and then turn it off and all fine again. I tried to reisntall dropbox app, nothing. I have 200 gb of 2 tb space on it. And i have it isntalled on few laptops too and all fine there. What do u think about it?

Thanks for your post, dglarseniy.
What’s the app version you see running on your Dropbox app? Also, what’s the syncing status it shows now, when syncing isn’t paused? Feel free to send a screenshot of it, as well.
Did you notice this behavior after a specific OS/Dropbox update?
Let me know, and we can take a closer look.
- dglarseniy2 years agoHelpful | Level 5So, all three my pcs runing on same dropbox version, 1 laptop on windows 10, one lap on win11 and the pc we r talking about is a big and new one and not laptop, started on win10 and on win11 now. All dropbox versions are the same and i really never seen dropbox updating, so i dont know when it happened, i started to feel it like a week ago. About a status, if i let dropbox to slowdown explorer for 10+ minutes nvm what it is syncing, it never ends, just write syncing and it never ends. If i press pause syncing for 10 minutes, it changes its status to "Pausing" and it never changes to "paused till (time)", so i just turn it off, all start to run great, then i turn it on again, it finishes the syncing, status is "All synced" or something and all fine till next sync.... it successes to sync, but explorer starts to slowdown... In this situation i am starting to have feeling that i cant ignore dying ssd version since i have this issue only on one pc out of three and on same conditions.... But how to understand the real reason if when i turn of dropbox everything works great....

Hi dglarseniy, could you try deleting the cache folder using these steps to see if this helps with the Dropbox desktop application?
- shastings2 years agoHelpful | Level 5
There are at least two other open threads showing MANY other users experiencing the same issues. DropBox: Look at the pattern. This is not about our caches, OS, anti-virus software, wi-fi, etc. It's about vs 202.4.5551. Quitting and restarting the app isn't a longterm solution. Performing an advanced reinstall doesn't work. Quit asking us to.
Please. Fix it.

Hi,
We're having similar issues on all our PCs. A mixture of windows 10 & 11. Explorer is fine after a
restart but once Dropbox has synced a few files explorer is slow. Icons for all files within dropbox just shoow as blank white, with no additional dropbox green tick/cloud icons.
Also dropbox will widget will show that it's currently syncing a file and doesnt show recently synced files (as though it's stuck/not working), but on dropbox web browser everything is fine.Dropbox 202.4.5551

Exactly the same symtoms! Phew i am not the one! And yes, it is the version! But how could it be that it isnt the same on all my pcs i work with? How smart is this bug is that it can choose? Where is the solution?

I turned off dropbox, then deleted all what was insde cache folder, turned dropbox on, it turned on faster, i made a test sync of one file and looks like there is no effect on explorer now, i will work today and let u know. Hope it solved it.

I've tried it at least 5 times, no change at all, after 10 minutes freezes as always.
- dglarseniy2 years agoHelpful | Level 5
Nothing changed, after few successful syncs, all slows down again. Now i am angry. Fix it fast. I am not going to wait for long, i will change cloud drive till end of the week if this will not be fixed.

It's sad that probably we should start looking for alternatives 😞

NB it affects the current Beta releases too - 203.3.4712 and 203.3.4740

Hey everyone, I have a temporary fix for Windows users (in case it affects other platforms).
Please be wary that this solution is not something Dropbox would recommend doing and I am not sure if this has any further repercussions on the functioning of Dropbox. Also if you're not careful, you might incur data loss. Please also remove this after Dropbox releases an updated version (you'll have to check manually).
- Download the latest working version (for me at least) of Dropbox: 201.4.5551 (Offline installer)
- In your firewall: block the Dropbox Updater at 'C:\Program Files (x86)\Dropbox\Update\DropboxUpdate.exe' to prevent Dropbox from updating.
- Uninstall the current Dropbox version (no need to delete files or log out)
- Install the downloaded version, log in after it's installed and it should do the initial sync as always
To remove: simply remove the firewall rule you added and Dropbox should auto-update soon enough (it needs to be closed and opened again for it to happen though).

Agreed!
I've tested it on the Beta channel builds as well, as the current stable version and it has the same problems. (v203.3.4712 & v203.3.4740). - dglarseniy2 years agoHelpful | Level 5
I did what u said, and it didnt help, i am running on 201.4.5551 and still for no reason i see error that something cant be synced and it is stuck....

Thanks, downgrading to 201.4.5552 and using firewall to prevent update worked for me
- Kuba22 years agoHelpful | Level 5
Which solution worked for You kriko42 ?
- keithrnorris2 years agoHelpful | Level 5
After two weeks I finally gave up. Support is useless. For some reason one of my three devices does not have any problems yet. Dropbox insisted that it is a problem with my device. Obviously by reading this forum it is a Dropbox issue. Switched to OneDrive and works good.

After one day of testing, they solved the problem, everything work fine again.

HI all, for anyone who's still affected by this, could you let us know here so that we can reach out via email to have a further look internally?
- ssjandres2 years agoExplorer | Level 3
I'm still having the same issues. I cannot open any files through windows explorer, because it freezes (endless loading) as soon as I click on a folder or file.
