Dropbox and Boxcryptor - can't access my Thesis files anymore.

Dear Community,

I have a serious problem and hope somebody can help me:

I am working since month on my diploma thesis, all files for that stored under Dropbox in a directory encrypted with boxcryptor classic, which I made visible as drive "K". Since two days I cannot open any of my files anymore. Word, Excel etc. all tell me, that the documents cannot be read and maybe corrupted. If I try to use Windows explorer to copy one of these files from the boxcryptor drive "K" to any local directory, explorer tells me that he source file or the source drive could not be opened - but it is full visible in explorer and Boxcrypter opens up the encrypypted directory with my password w/o any complains.

I have not changed anything in my installation. How can I get access to my files again?
I am using boxcryptor classic v 1.3.2 and dropbox client v213.4.4597.

I really need your help!

Thanks
Kathleen

Hi KathleenKnickrehm! Hope you don’t mind if I jump in.

At this point, I’d also recommend checking this out with the Boxcryptor support directly at support@boxcryptor.com, like Hannah mentioned above.

If they can’t find something on their end, please let us know here and we’ll investigate further after that.

Maybe it's a good idea to ask "boxcryptor" for help.

    Hi Kathleen,
I has the same problem. I am also using BoxCryptor Classic from the very beginning when they started. All worked fine until January 2025 when I tried to access my encrypted files on Dropbox folder via BoxCryptor Classic mount (in late December 2024 all was fine). To my surprise I see all my files but when try to open them then I got the error. I was desperate the same as you. But... I found the solution which is really simple: unmount Boxcryptor, close it. And then copy all Boxcryptor folder with encrypted files from Dropbox folder to your local PC folder. NB! When you copy the folder then do it when files are encrypted (with "gibberish/scrambled" names). Then open your BoxCryptor Classic and remove your current mount which is leading to the folder in Dropbox. Afterwards create a new mount with path to your new folder which you just copied to your PC in local storage... open/mount it with the same password and now you can access again your valuable files!!! ;)

To my understanding since BoxCryptor Classic is not supported long time ago (since 2017?) and Dropbox changed something in their file system/structure (whatever) the old BoxCryptor Classic did not work anymore as usual.
