I've been a member since Dropbox's launch and I'm done; I should have joined the lawsuit.
I joined when you launched. When you offered, I think it was like 100 GB or something, this amazing public folder you could actually put a webpage on (though I never did), and you were offered it for...

Dropbox has never, ever offered that much. A few hundred initial subscribers were offered 5gb, however, Dropbox has always only ever given 2gb. Even with all its referral space you could only ever max out at 18gb (16gb in referrals based upon 32 referrals at 500mb each). If you were referred yourself you could get an extra 500mb and some bonus space like using Carousel, Getting started etc. The maximum free space was about 20gb.
Initial paid plans (at $99) were for 50gb.
My guess here is you are actually mistaking Dropbox for Box.com - which offered a lot more space, although I believe now is only 10gb.
