Yes, you are correct, last version supports the provided feature. v234 was not available at the time I posted my last post. That's why I tried to nudge you. 🙂 Fortunately, it was meaningless.

By the way, v233 and earlier don't support symbols outside basic multilingual plane. I checked v233 (just before previous post of me) and it didn't work! Restart only is NOT enough - I checked!

Hi Здравко​ - can you try updating to v234 (the most recent stable just released) and try restarting the client? The desktop client was the last component to get updated for this, and it's possible this was caused by being on an older build (or even perhaps just needing to restart the client after we turned on the desktop client gating, literally yesterday).

I hope it wouldn't take so long (6 more years) to adapt your applications to support sync files named in such a way...??? 🧐

Currently, when I name on the Dropbox web some file in such a way, the same file disappear locally! The same when I rename some local file - the same file disappear on your web page (and on the Dropbox server of course). 🤷

I hope this is object of improvement already...

Dropbox now supports an extended set of characters in filenames including:

😀 Emojis 😀

💬 Chinese, Japanese, Korean scripts 💬

🏄‍♂️ RTL (right-to-left) scripts 🏄‍♂️

Some examples:

• Project launch 🚀.doc
• 📚 Budget review.xls
• Team pics 🐱.zip
• 𝛑 formula.txt
• 𩸽.pdf

These names appear the same on dropbox.com, in the Dropbox desktop and mobile apps, and across supported devices. Learn more here.

This idea needs no explanation.  The issue was raised 8 years ago in 2017 and the idea was raised in 2023 and closed in 2025.

I use Dropbox to sync my Obsidian database (which is just a bunch of Markdown files)

I just discovered that "Bookshelf 📚.md" is not syncing (I'm on macOS 15.5 and sync with Android and iPadOS)

I'd like to use Obsidian freely and emojis are really helpful in naming my pages.

Im sure there are a ton of other use cases that can leverage full emoji support.

Creating a new idea so the idea can continue to work towards implementation.

I realize this is a thorny issue and implementation may be difficult.

I feel just because it's difficult doesn't close the "idea" of it being implemented.  The whole point of conversation and discussion is to keep speculating on new paths to making it happen!

Can I support this wholeheartedly? I'm using a next-generation note-taking app which stores notes as markdown files (Logseq - check it out, it's amazing, but there's also Roam Research and Obsidian, which work in a similar way). I would like to use emojis for note titles. This greatly improves my organisation. I just cannot get this to work in dropbox, due to the failure to sync files with emojis in the filenames. Please implement this, Dropbox. If you do a bit of research on Logseq, Roam, and Obsidian (I think Joplin notes is also another one), you will find that these types of apps are really taking off, and many users have a preference to use emojis in filenames. If this is not implemented soon, I am going to have to consider migrating to Google Drive for my note-syncing.
