What if I create a shared link with settings and add an expiry on the link ?

Arg it sounds like I need my users to have a dropbox plus account to set up an expiry date ?
It's the case from the API like from the UI ?

Yes, the shared link expiration functionality is only available to paid accounts, both in the API and UI.
