Problem In our Dropbox Business account, we often need to share links to files or folders with colleagues who already have access and have Dropbox installed. Currently: When we use the âShareâ feature, the link opens in the browser. This is inefficient when the user just needs to open the local file/folder, especially for deeply nested folders. Or worse, the person sends the file as an email, and now we have multiple versions and confusion about which is the "source of truth". Workaround: We have to manually send them the file path (e.g., /Users/bob/Dropbox/ProjectX/Report.docx), which: Requires the recipient to hunt it down in Finder/Explorer. Is error-prone due to path differences, renames, or accidental typos. Offers a worse user experience than comparable tools like Google Drive File Stream, which can open the file directly via a smart link from the web. Proposed Solution Introduce a new link format â .dropboxlink files â that can be double-clicked or opened to launch the Dropbox desktop app, which then opens the file or folder locally. How it might work: The link includes a Dropbox-relative path (e.g., /ProjectX/Report.docx). When opened, the Dropbox app: Resolves the correct local file path on that device. Brings the file into sync if itâs online-only (with options if needed). Opens the file in its native app or highlights it in Finder/Explorer. Key Benefits Faster collaboration: Opens files/folders locally with one click. Less error-prone than copying/pasting paths. Easier onboarding: Helps users avoid learning about aliases, sync paths, or browser UX differences. Reusable: These .dropboxlink files could be stored on desktops, added to docs, or included in readme files for onboarding. Design Considerations Security: Only opens if user has access. Device-aware: Dropbox app already tracks where the folder is located per device. Fallbacks: If the file is no longer available, provide a browser fallback or a âRequest Accessâ flow. If offline or not synced, offer user-friendly prompts (e.g. âMake available offlineâ).619Views3likes1CommentRemove login or sign-up popup when sharing a link.
how do I get rid of this frustrating pop up when sharing a link with a client? We're a paid dropbox business member and I get a tonne of clients telling me they cant access the files because of this popup. Needs to able to be switch this off. I pay to have ability to share files externally so either make it free and keep the pop up, or let me turn it off. Hi, It would be fantastic to be able to send out a hyperlink, to a certain page in a PDF. I have tried using hyperlink=#page=15 (for example) and a number of other approaches all unsuccessfully. This would be a really useful feature for dropbox. It would save me so much time. Thanks,337Views3likes3CommentsI'd like to be able to change the permissions on all shared links at the same time.
import a feature that changes the permissions of all the shared links simultaneously I'm having a hard time changing the validity of each link, and it's really tiring. This feature would be a miracle for me, it would make things easier. I want all the links. Anyone with the link can watch the video, but unfortunately some links are team-only, and I have to change their validity for whoever has the link. I hope you make this feature available. I have thousands of links, and I have to change them all, and it's very tiring.321Views7likes6CommentsAllow us to see all the folders a user has access to and easily remove them from member.
Currently you can see who are the shared people in a folder or file. We need to be able to select a person and see the folders and files they have access to, and then obviously un-share from there. Not being able to manage this easily is a significant security risk.294Views5likes4CommentsBypass Request Permission to Join Folder on "anyone with the link can edit" folders
It would be helpful in certain situations to be able to bypass the the "request permission to join folder" prompt when sharing a folder via a anyone with the link can edit permission. We already set the link to be anyone with the link. If they have the link, I'd like them to be able to edit the folder. This is already how it behaves in individual accounts.232Views1like5CommentsView shared photos as a gallery
When I share a Dropbox link to a folder with photographs, the web link is not optimized for photo viewing on any platform (phone or desktop). The thumbnails are too small and compressed. And on a phone's web browser, users can swipe through individual photos, but it requires two separate taps, thereby quickly becoming cumbersome. I am suggesting the idea to have Dropbox photo folders appear as a dynamic, tiled gallery, much like on a dedicated iOS or Android app. Google Drive's photo gallery is a great example of how to implement such a feature on Dropbox.205Views2likes4CommentsSharing of starred images or voting for favourite files.
Idea is simply to modify current account specific star system to multi user or creating a new voting button to allow trusted others to see your rating and add their own if they have edit privileges. This would be much faster for simple Go / No Go collaborative decisions for large numbers of files than current âadd commentâ method. A stretch goal would be different colours of stars to show each userâs choice Example would be a creator shares a Dropbox folder of 500 proof photos with a client and asks them to select the ones that they wish to be edited by starring just their favourites. This MUST improve Dropboxâs collaboration function and as long as it is added to edit privileges, I canât see any downsides I see that this has been suggested before and closed out, but possibly it is because many users donât realise this part of the forum exists so donât up vote?161Views1like3CommentsAutomatic password generation when creating a password-protected shared link.
It would be great if, when creating a password-protected link, a password with a preset length and strength was generated automatically. Perhaps the password that has already been entered could be displayed so that it can be copied.156Views0likes2CommentsComment without Login
I'm sharing photos and videos, as well as production documents with clients and love to get their feedback on the specific file. However, many companies prohibit employees from generating their own Dropbox account, which is needed to comment on the files. How about just having to "sign up" with their Name and Email in order to get notifications? Would love to have an easier way to share files with clients and get their feedback as simple as possible.145Views1like1Comment
