26Views0likes1CommentHow can I download my Dropbox contents onto an external drive?
I'm really really disappointed with Dropbox over the last several years. I had an enormous issue as did others with preview of images and photos on my laptop which after a multi-year discussion on this forum with dropbox led me to give up and put them on OneDrive (which is much better at preview of thumbnails) so I could continue my family history writing. But I continued to use Dropbox as my backup solution and as needed for sharing. I'm again totally disappointed with the effort to backup my dropbox cloud to an external harddrive. I've read all the posts here and on Reddit about the best way to do this. You have to synch the files to your harddrive on the laptop and then copy them to the harddrive (making it a multi-step process). I think I would live with that if Dropbox worked consistently with making files offline. But I can select a folder and say make the files offline (ie on my laptop). Then when I try to copy those to the harddrive I often get errors. Only some of the files in the folders show up offline. Sometimes I have to repeat the procedure multiple times on a single folder to get the files offline. It is ridiculous that I can't select a dropbox folder and copy it to a hardrive and have dropbox dowload the files either directly to the external hardrive or to my laptop. I consider myself a fairly expert user of Dropbox (10+ years) and used to love it. Now I just tolerate it. PS I tried cloudmount but ran into some issues with that solution too.50Views1like6CommentsWhat tool does Dropbox use to zip folders for download?
Summary: I’m trying to figure out how to create a usable zip file out of files that have non-ASCII filenames, so I’d like to find out what zip tool Dropbox uses when I download a folder from Dropbox. Background: It turns out that most zip-file-creation tools cause problems when you try to zip a file that has a non-ASCII filename. But when I download a folder from Dropbox that contains files with non-ASCII filenames, the folder arrives on my computer in the form of a zip file that correctly includes those files. So whatever tool Dropbox is using (internally) to automatically create zip files for download is doing exactly what I want to do. Workaround: If I want to zip a folder, I can upload it to Dropbox and then download it. That works, but it takes a lot of bandwidth and time. Question: So I’d like to find out what zip-file-creation tool Dropbox is using to create zip files for download, in hopes that I can use that same tool (or something similar) on my local computer, to be able to correctly zip non-ASCII filenames without having to upload and download to and from Dropbox. So do any of you know what Dropbox uses to create zip files for download? thanks, —JedSolved125Views0likes4CommentsHow to download an FMPro file without having a numerical suffix added to the filename?
Is there any way to download an FMPro file in Dropbox to my Filemaker Go app without having a numerical suffix added to the filename? I want to be able to view the latest version as it exists in Dropbox. I want the new version to overwrite the version currently in FM Go.51Views0likes15CommentsDoes Dropbox support 5 Gbps sync (uploads and dowload) speeds?
I am a professor a University of Florida (UF). We have a business Dropbox account through UF (I cannot use this community with that account for some reasons, so I am writing from my private one). I work often from home. All my data and my students' data (Many GBs and TBs) is constantly synced with Dropbox. Fiber was just installed in my neighborhood, and I am debating between 1Gbps and 5Gbps speed. The latter is 50% more expensive, but I would pay for it if Dropbox is able to handle Gbps uploads and dowload speeds. If not, there is not really much of a point, 1 Gbps is more than enough for all the other things I do. Thank you Best A19Views0likes1CommentI'm trying to download large folders from the web, but not all of them are downloaded.
I have a large folder full of (other smaller folders filled with) videos files that I am trying to download and store on an external harrd drive to have a backup of these videos. In total, it comes to ~7 Tb. I have tried downloading each of the smaller folders one at a time but this often results in not all of the videos files downloading. Does anyone know of a better way to do this? Thank you in advance!13Views0likes1CommentHow to prevent users from downloading my Excel sheet?
I would like to share a form, an Excel Sheet, with other users. But due to simple security topics an to safe "my work" (data and calculations) from black-copy I don´t want them to doanload it on their workspace, but to use it directly within dropbox for PC. So other users should be allowed to "write", but not to doaonload - Any Idea, if this is possible an how I can manage this in dropbox?19Views0likes2CommentsI downloaded one of my folders months ago and now I can't unzip it as it throws an error.
Hi! I downloaded a folder full of pictures and then deleted from dropbox. I didn't checked the files right after and a couple months later when i wanted to unzip i realized that there went something wrong since there was a 0 byte foldername.zip and a normal size foldername.n3QcyulW.zip.part among the downloads. Sadly I couldn't open that and the error message told that the destination path of the file includes caracters blocking the unzip. Anyone has an idea if it is possible to repair the file or somehow reach the files? It is a couple gigabyte so there should be something zipped. Thanks26Views0likes3CommentsWhy do I have to re-download online-only files that they once were available offline?
I accidentally toggled all my files (Mac OS) to "online only," and now in order to open any of them I have to download it. This means I have 800MB of files to download, and since it takes an hour or more to download a file of just a few MB large, it would take days to download everything. I don't understand, because these files started as offline files, so why do I have to download everything again? Isn't there some way to make this happen faster?26Views0likes2Comments
