27 TopicsAdd .dropboxignore directory to exclude folders without using selective sync
Please please please can you add a feature that allows folders to be excluded from the Dropbox account (on windows and mac). For sure I'm not the first person to request this, but I'm yet to find a good explanation of why it's not there. A quick google search reveals loads of people also looking for the same feature. I really like the workflow I have with dropbox, but it's getting to the point where I might switch providers in order to allow better selective sync. I've seen hackish solutions using selective sync, but it would be great if this could be done in one of the following ways: - global pattern matching eg "node_modules" - a marker file in the directory like .dropboxignore - a simple right click context menu "Ignore this folder" Other than that, keep up the good work. When I searched for this, I found this suggested several months ago for the purpose of Raspberry Pis. That suggestion was closed for inactivity. I had been using Dropbox in my Linux virtual machines on Mac with Intel processors for quite a long time. I just got my first Mac machine with Apple Silicon and was so disappointed this didn't work in the Linux VM on the ARM64. I depend on ability to share between the Virtual Machine and other devices connected to Dropbox for several of my workflows, and currently must use the Dropbox website to download, make my change, delete the online copy, then upload it again while in the Linux Virtual Machine. And hey, it sounds like adding this would help the Raspberry Pi folks too!61Views3likes2CommentsMove "Sync next" back to the right-click menu on the desktop app.
Sync Next is for when there are multiple files syncing but one or more of which are needed sooner by the user. The best place to select which ones should synch next are by right-clicking those files themselves. Moving the option into the right-click menu make it easy for the user to select exactly which files are important to sync next without scrolling through hundreds of disorganized filenames in the status menu.182Views3likes2CommentsImperative: Camera Uploads Update
Hello. Can you please make it so that people are able to change the name of the "Camera Uploads" without it cancelling the automatic uploads after doing so and also make it so that people can simultaneously upload files from multiple albums in their device into separate folders on Dropbox? This will make it far easier everyone to organize everything, especially when sharing the folder(s) with others. Point 1: As of right now, if someone were to change the name of the "Camera Uploads" folder to something else, let's say to "Andrew's Content," the automatic uploads will completely cancel future automatic uploads into that folder and create a whole entire new folder, again named "Camera Uploads," resulting in 2 separate folders which is inefficient, can lead users to become very confused, and what can be seen as an error in the algorithm from my point of view. Point 2: If a business has multiple people sharing their "Camera Uploads" folder to them, that business has no way to distinguish between which "Camera Uploads" folder belongs to whom, nor is the business able to change the name of the folder for themselves on their end. This is a major problem. Point 3: When people want to set up automatic uploads from multiple albums in their phone named, let's call them 'Content 1,' Content 2,' and 'Content 3,' and have them saved in either the same and/or separate folders in Dropbox, they can't because it is not even a feature. Can you please look into this and make these, what I think would be very beneficial quality of life, updates? Thank you so much for your time and consideration! Thank you, Andrew236Views3likes5CommentsRestore the Linux Dropbox Daemon folder selective sync GUI
That latest update to the Linux Dropbox daemon removed the GUI for allowing users to select which folders to sync. This was confirmed to me by technical support (hence me making this suggestion here, per their recommendation). The CLI still works of course (e.g., dropbox exclude add/remove), but this adds another, odious, step, since one has to first find where those files and folders are on Dropbox via the web browser, then build the correct path and copy that to the CLI. It is very, very inefficient. We have gotten used to and accepted the lack of good Linux functionality on Linux over the years (and certainly not smartsync...) while paying the same price as anyone else, but this new regression really does add a whole new impediment to using Dropbox efficiently, especially for business. Please restore the folder select GUI, at the very least!262Views3likes2CommentsGive us an option to not sync hidden files.
Allow the user to set an option to NOT sync files with hidden attribute. Some applications create lots of hidden files to handle internal processes. These files are important for the current operation of an application, but not for the user via Dropbox. A less useful option would be to allow the user to specify a blacklist of filenames or folder names to not sync. *.tmp or .profile277Views2likes5CommentsAllow AppData(or any) Folder on my computer to be backed up
There's already another idea but it has been closed. I'm floored this wasn't a easy/obvious idea that I would expect to be implemented many years ago. Why is the backup feature so restrictive on what I can backup? Please (re)consider or I'm curious why not?44Views1like1CommentStorage Usage Quota Enforced by Dropbox for Desktop
We would like a (business-focused?) option where we can set a maximum percentage of free disk storage that the Dropbox app is able to use on-disk —ideally to be set within the Dropbox Admin Console and apply to all accounts, though with exceptions available, similar to how the "Storage limit per member" & associated "Exceptions" settings work today— plus a "hard stop" limit, e.g. pause syncing if free storage is <10 percent of total disk space. The general idea here would be if a system has 1TB of storage and 200GB already used for system/apps/email/whatever, Dropbox should not be able to use more than 80 percent of the currently-remaining free space. So in this example, assuming no change to non-Dropbox storage usage, if Dropbox's locally-synced storage usage exceeds ~640GB of downloaded files an actionable alert gets presented to the end user… and if they exceed the disk usage quota syncing gets paused until they free up storage, ideally by setting Dropbox files to online-only. This usage limit would need to scale dynamically, so that when Dropbox is using 200 GB (leading to 400GB total disk usage) and other processes on the system claim another 250 GB of storage (650GB total usage), Dropbox is now only allowed to claim another 280GB of the remaining 350 GB storage from that point in time. If other processes keep claiming free disk space the Dropbox app's limit should dynamically adjust until the hard-stop limit. This would help prevent situations we see now where somebody sets an entire project folder to offline mode (accidentally or without realizing just how much storage the folder will use) the Dropbox app will happily download files until the disk is completely full …which then causes all kinds of unfortunate knock-on effects and can be tough to reverse. With the addition of the Sync & Storage dashboard to make it easier for folks to see what is using up their space and quickly free up storage via Smart Sync Online-only mode, leveraging that to get people to offload Dropbox files —especially via a progressive series of alerts when their Dropbox folder is approaching/at the disk usage quota— would help prevent these disk-full situations caused by Dropbox. Thanks!162Views1like1CommentDefault should not be "Remove Local Files"
Most recent Windows desktop update allows users to have files only on the cloud (saving local disk space). Problem is by DEFAULT, the update REMOVES all files locally WITHOUT WARNING (i.e. must have internet access to get to them)! For me, this defeats the reason I use DropBox in the first place, and I could just use the Microsoft cloud instead. I'm really glad I discovered this "removal" before I ended up someplace with NO internet access and NO access to files I need! I had to spend an hour undoing the cloud-only folders I needed locally and wait for all my files to re-sync! The default setting SHOULD have kept all files local and allowed me to select which ones I could tolerate being "cloud only", instead of putting a tremendous surprise burden on all users.116Views1like1Comment
