37 TopicsAdd .dropboxignore directory to exclude folders without using selective sync
Please please please can you add a feature that allows folders to be excluded from the Dropbox account (on windows and mac). For sure I'm not the first person to request this, but I'm yet to find a good explanation of why it's not there. A quick google search reveals loads of people also looking for the same feature. I really like the workflow I have with dropbox, but it's getting to the point where I might switch providers in order to allow better selective sync. I've seen hackish solutions using selective sync, but it would be great if this could be done in one of the following ways: - global pattern matching eg "node_modules" - a marker file in the directory like .dropboxignore - a simple right click context menu "Ignore this folder" Other than that, keep up the good work. Cheers. The ability to preserve, view, sort by, etc the original Creation Dates(and other metadata) of files is missing or severely limited in the Dropbox mobile apps. People who don’t use Dropbox primarily for business purposes on a computer but, as many of us do these days, use our smartphones as our primary(or only) method of keeping track of media/documents/audio files/etc are having to deal with the frustrating situation of trying and failing to backup/reorganize/download to another mobile device/etc our files without losing this extremely important file metadata. I can’t even view ANY file information on non-photo files, and the photos are difficult to even upload with a title that reflects the actual creation date. If not uploaded at a painful 1 image at a time (and many times not even then) the file name will be changed to the upload date/time. The creation date is ALWAYS listed as the upload time or the last time that it was moved, downloaded, re-uploaded, etc. There’s no sort by CREATION date, only sort by Modification date which is just a complete denial of basic file management for those of us who manage all of our files on mobile phones and tablets. We desperately need full file information accessibility for Dropbox mobile apps… ESPECIALLY the ability to preserve and sort by the ORIGINAL file creation dates… and to not lose access to those creation dates when moved, renamed, downloaded, re-uploaded, etc, but to keep them intact despite all modifications. Creation dates and modification dates can be preserved separately without sacrificing one for the other, as long as the files’ metadata remains intact.6.9KViews22likes26CommentsMove "Sync next" back to the right-click menu on the desktop app.
Sync Next is for when there are multiple files syncing but one or more of which are needed sooner by the user. The best place to select which ones should synch next are by right-clicking those files themselves. Moving the option into the right-click menu make it easy for the user to select exactly which files are important to sync next without scrolling through hundreds of disorganized filenames in the status menu.140Views3likes2CommentsRestore the Linux Dropbox Daemon folder selective sync GUI
That latest update to the Linux Dropbox daemon removed the GUI for allowing users to select which folders to sync. This was confirmed to me by technical support (hence me making this suggestion here, per their recommendation). The CLI still works of course (e.g., dropbox exclude add/remove), but this adds another, odious, step, since one has to first find where those files and folders are on Dropbox via the web browser, then build the correct path and copy that to the CLI. It is very, very inefficient. We have gotten used to and accepted the lack of good Linux functionality on Linux over the years (and certainly not smartsync...) while paying the same price as anyone else, but this new regression really does add a whole new impediment to using Dropbox efficiently, especially for business. Please restore the folder select GUI, at the very least!229Views3likes2CommentsExclude sync based on filetype
Hi, I have been using Dropbox for many years, and am generally happy with it. I am recently using Adobe Premiere Elements to edit and create videos. I want to export the final file to my Dropbox. I can point APE to my dropbox, but as part of the process, it creates 2 very large temporary files (.aac and .m4v), and when completed, these are merged into the final .mp4 file. Because I am creating some large 4K mp4 files, the .m4v file is just as large as the final mp4 (about 20GB for a 40 miniute video. I could export to a non-dropbox folder and then manually move the mp4 to dropbox. What would be better would be if I could exclude all .acc and .m4v file from the dropbox sync. ie, juat as I can exclude folders in a selective sync, I would like to exclude files by filetype. I contacted support who confirmed it was not currently possible. I think this would be useful for many other use cases. Paul Butler167Views3likes2CommentsGet an option to prioritize syncing for folders on the desktop app.
Dropbox currently has an option to prioritize which files to sync first. I'd like to extend that to provide the same functionality for selected folders. This will be particularly helpful in migrating to new equipment but also when changing a large amount of content. Can do?172Views3likes4CommentsImperative: Camera Uploads Update
Hello. Can you please make it so that people are able to change the name of the "Camera Uploads" without it cancelling the automatic uploads after doing so and also make it so that people can simultaneously upload files from multiple albums in their device into separate folders on Dropbox? This will make it far easier everyone to organize everything, especially when sharing the folder(s) with others. Point 1: As of right now, if someone were to change the name of the "Camera Uploads" folder to something else, let's say to "Andrew's Content," the automatic uploads will completely cancel future automatic uploads into that folder and create a whole entire new folder, again named "Camera Uploads," resulting in 2 separate folders which is inefficient, can lead users to become very confused, and what can be seen as an error in the algorithm from my point of view. Point 2: If a business has multiple people sharing their "Camera Uploads" folder to them, that business has no way to distinguish between which "Camera Uploads" folder belongs to whom, nor is the business able to change the name of the folder for themselves on their end. This is a major problem. Point 3: When people want to set up automatic uploads from multiple albums in their phone named, let's call them 'Content 1,' Content 2,' and 'Content 3,' and have them saved in either the same and/or separate folders in Dropbox, they can't because it is not even a feature. Can you please look into this and make these, what I think would be very beneficial quality of life, updates? Thank you so much for your time and consideration! Thank you, Andrew195Views2likes5CommentsGive us an option to not sync hidden files.
Allow the user to set an option to NOT sync files with hidden attribute. Some applications create lots of hidden files to handle internal processes. These files are important for the current operation of an application, but not for the user via Dropbox. A less useful option would be to allow the user to specify a blacklist of filenames or folder names to not sync. *.tmp or .profile224Views2likes5CommentsManual-sync mode for selected folders
Many users that have large quantity of files in Dropbox complains about the indexing time as Dropbox implements a two-way synchronization that always monitor the selected folders to sync. This issue is currently affecting me as I have 4TB files on my Dropbox and whenever I start the Dropbox app it hangs the explorer on Windows making it unusable until the indexing process is completed. This idea is to introduce a Manual-Sync mode for folders that the user can mark as manual-sync and decide when to download or upload the data from that folder from/to Dropbox so it avoids the constant indexing for folders with huge amount of files. For Example: A music library of 2TB of small files (20-50MB size) can be marked as Manual-Sync with this: - Dropbox client will still show the contents as Online-Only for a folder that exists on the Dropbox server. - The user can decide which folders to upload or download. The option to Upload/Download a manual-synced folder should display in the right-click context menu. - When uploading/downloading a specific folder, the indexing will happen in the scope of that folder reducing the indexing time and the indexing will happen whenever the user wants to sync the folder to upload or download data. - The data in folders set as Manual-Sync is only local and can be deleted without affecting the Dropbox server files. - Folder marked as Manual-Sync will be ignored from the Dropbox regular indexed process as it should only index the folders that are defined by the user to auto-sync (In the same way it works now) This will help to improve the Dropbox client performance and will give more control to the users regarding the folders they want to auto sync as users will be able to just download a large folder to have a local copy without the worries of indexing time and continue using Dropbox for other folders without being taxed by indexing times of folders that are marked as Manual-Sync.215Views2likes4Comments
