Weird discrepancies between Dropboxes

I've been trying to do something relatively simple: update Dropbox so that I have a file I can work from on two devices.

Nope. Not simple at all.

The file I want to be available is a Scrivener project. It backs up to Dropbox. I recently changed the name of the project so that I could find it more easily. I also tagged the correct backup folder. Now, when I open the backup folder through Scrivener, I find my project there with its new name, in an orange-tagged folder. When I open Dropbox from Finder, or from the desktop app, the folder is not tagged, and the folder does not contain my renamed project but only has the old file. Screenshots attached. The folder in question is Scrivener FISH working_bak and the renamed Scrivener project is Scrivener RHVG Fish working_bak

I uninstalled and reinstalled the desktop app yesterday and it says all files are up to date.

Advice please, I am stumped.

IMac OS 10.13.6

    Hi anglichanks

Thanks for the images they do help.

What I think you have done is you have renamed the backup on your computer on in its original folder but not then put it into Dropbox. There is no link on your computer between these two folders. You need to manually move the files from Scrinver in to Dropbox OR tell Scrinver to save in to the Dropbox directory.

Thanks. I had changed the backup destination address in Scrivener before posting to that Dropbox folder, so I had uploaded the files directly (if that's what you mean) but the discrepancy is still there.

That means the issue isnt with Dropbox then - Dropbox can only sync between Dropbox folders on different devices.

Dropbox has no way of moving the files from the old location to the new one. You'll need to do that manually.

Sorry if I'm being dense, but I haven't changed the destination, just renamed the project. The project (or file, "project" is Scrivener terminology) is being backed-up directly into Dropbox, as it always has been with no issues before now. So Dropbox should update to show the latest file name, and then sync to other Dropbox folders. And it's not doing that. Or am I misunderstanding you?

Are those images from 2 different machines?  If so they should be syncing.

So as I said then they shouldnt be syncing and shouldn't be the same. That isn't how Dropbox works.

Dropbox can ONLY update edit and work on files inside of \Dropbox. It has no link/connection/understanding or ANYTHING of files or folders outside of \Dropbox.

When you update a file in Dropbox it will only change in the \Dropbox directory. It cannot alter files elsewhere. You will need to manually move the files from the other directory in to Dropbox and vice-versa.
