Teams vs Sharing One Account

Hi all,

I have a client that is currently using one Dropbox account and having multiple employees share that account. I know this against Dropbox's terms and they plan on upgrading to a teams account in the future but I had a question.

They're experiencing an issue where shared links they've created end up not working. Here's the scenario:

  • A new folder is created when a new client purchases a service
  • Inside that folder, the staff create a new folder and then create a shared link to send to the client
  • That folder is never moved or deleted

For some reason, the shared link will break hours, days, or weeks later but the folder still exists.

I'm thinking this is directly related to the staff all sharing one account and Dropbox is getting confused about which updates to process.

Would a Teams account likely solve this issue?

Hi anonymous, thanks for bringing this to our attention.

As you're aware, sharing account credentials is a breach of the terms of service, and can result in account termination.

Regarding the shared links, what error are they getting specifically?

This will help me to assist further.

Thanks for the quick reply, Jay!

I haven't seen the error first-hand but this is what they say they're getting:

"This has been deleted or this no longer exists"

Sorry to jump in here, anonymous.

Depending on someone's plan, there are limits when sharing links, that have to do with traffic on the links, downloads per day, etc.

Could it be possible that this is the issue your client is having?

    Thanks a great point, Hannah!

They haven't mentioned a “link temporarily disabled” error but that doesn't mean it's not happening. Their deliverables are rather large at times so it could definitely affect them.

Adds to the benefits of upgrading to a team account.
