Re: Dropbox freezes and crashes when I navigate in my Dropbox folder within File explorer.

Hello,

Since Dropbox updated to the latest build 202.4.5551, my Windows 10 has been freezing as soon as Dropbox is launched. I have installed all Windows updates. I know it is Dropbox that is causing the issue because as soon as I uninstalled Dropbox, the problem goes away. I tried to re-installed Dropbox but the problem shows up again.

Hope Dropbox team can address this as soon as possible. If there is a temporary fix, I would love to hear.

Thank you and best regards,

YFong

Since the automatic update to version 202.4.5551 - none of our five computers at work will sync. All running Windows 11. We have just rolled one of the computers back to version 197.4.7629 and it is now syncing fine again.

Hi there Y Fong & Melman - thanks for your reports.

Can you please let us know approximately how many files you're syncing locally on the affected device(s)?

Also, are you running any 3rd party apps that are monitoring, syncing or backing up your files?

Any additional information or screenshots are more than welcome!

Hi Walter, I have around 7TB of data that's set to online-only. I sync very little to my computer. I've been working from Dropbox like this for many years with no issues. This latest update has killed all syncing. No 3rd party apps running. I did all the suggested troubleshooting and the only thing that worked was reverting back to version  197.4.7629. Which subsequently Dropbox just auto-updated again to 202.4.5551 and killed my syncing again 🤦‍♂️

    Hi Walter,

I appreciate the response. I am not using any 3rd party apps. I have been using Dropbox for years with no issues until this latest update. I, like @Melman, tried installing a previous and the problem went away until it was updated to the this current build. My problem is more severe, i had to hard restart Windows (or Windows restarts by itself) and eventually would not load Windows and j had to reset my laptop….
I also tried to reinstall Dropbox after resetting my PC, same issues arose. Very upsetting. Have you received other complaints from users?

    Thank you!

    Hello,
I already did a reset of the PC. The folders that you asked me to remove in registry are not there. I need to file a complaint that my laptop is not functioning since the disaster. It freezes up randomly now even without Dropbox installed. I learned from others that they have also experienced issues with this Build. I hope Dropbox can assist in compensating for loss of computer.

Hey Y Fong, sorry to hear about that!

It's rather odd that you're experiencing this, even when the app isn't currently installed.

Do you recall, approximately how many files you had within your Dropbox folder? Is it possible that you were using more than 300K which is our app's soft limit

I'm seeing the same problem. It started happening exactly last Tuesday and it correlates with the update to the latest stable version 202.4.5551. I also have about 400'000 files in my dropbox, but everything worked perfectly before then. I even already tried to reinstall Dropbox, but this didn't help.

What I'm seeing is Dropbox just stopping to sync anything (up or down) sometimes. I feel it has to do with files that are opened in exclusive write mode (for example, Outlook PST files). It is expected that those files can't be synced while the offending program is open, but before this update the files would be synced by the program afterwards, now Dropbox just does nothing at all afterwards.

The oddest issue is that when I'm trying to open an online-only file, it won't open as Dropbox is stuck. I then proceed to try and restart the Dropbox client to fix it, but when I "Quit Dropbox", suddenly all the files open before the client closes.
