I don't want to synch my desktop files ...
If you're seeing sync icons on your Desktop files, then they're syncing to Dropbox. You've likely enabled the Backup feature.

For some reason, I thought "backup" means unaffected by changes on the PC - as opposed to synching. So actually the same thing?
Does Dropbox "backup" delete pictures if they are accidentally deleted from PC? (OneDrive supposedly doesn't do that.)

Hi DBuser555, the computer backup is one way, meaning that changes on the computer would sync to the site alone. It won't sync to other computers or mobile devices, and you can't edit those files from the Dropbox site directly.
Files can be deleted from the computer, and if need be, recovered within the recovery period from the Dropbox site.
