"Open in Finder" and "Open in Word" not showing in Safari OSX for Mac
Hey folks,
When viewing dropbox files from the Safari browser (Safari v 13.0) I can no longer see the "Show in Finder" or 'Open in Word" / "Open in Adobe Acrobat" options for files.
I also have ...

Jay - do you have any updates in terms of timeframe that you can share for the resolution of this long-standing problem?
Thanks.

5 years agoHi JR25, PR8, geosinclair, Scott H., would it be possible to contact you at the emails provided on your forum profile to investigate this matter further?

Ideally the entire community is updated on progress on this matter. I too have been (patiently) waiting for an update on this matter, and I am subscribed to this thread.
While I think it's great that you're offering to contact a few recently-vocal members of the community about this matter, it is relevant to anyone who has macOS and looking to use Safari as part of their daily workflow alongside Dropbox.
I am "stuck" using Chrome and only doing so in order to utilize Dropbox for Business. I imagine there are many folks like me, just watching this thread and waiting for an update. I fear taking the conversation offline won't be helpful to the broader community who are awaiting some kind of word on progress on this issue, even though we're not continually leaving comments asking for updates.
- geosinclair5 years agoHelpful | Level 5Yes, thanks Jay.
- WildfireQueen5 years agoHelpful | Level 7Yes I agree. Iâve been waiting quite some time and the only update Iâve had was âweâre working on itâ. Honestly, it doesnât seem like you are. Itâs been an issue for quite some time and doesnât really seem that complicated since Chrome does have the function. Although I could be wrong of course.
But, even so, âSafari/Apple is preventing the use of this function because of x and yâ is an answer/update too, I can imagine Appleâs strong stance on privacy causing some issues with this function. Or, if this isnât a priority right now and we have to wait a few years until you have the time/manpower to fix it. If any such is the case, just say so? Probably most of us would understand to some degree and anyone reading would know whatâs causing the long wait. And I for one would appreciate the honesty.
Now youâre just stringing us along without any real answers for two years already. - JR255 years agoHelpful | Level 5
Hi Jay,
Yes, you may contact me. Looking forward to getting this issue resolved for our company and the rest of the community. I surely hope any input I can give you will help solve the problem. Hopefully we will have some good news to report to the community or at least a progress status.

Might I request help as well? I've been a Dropbox user with a paid pro account for over a decade and the lack of ability to open files via finder on my Mac from Safari is quite problematic for my workflows. It also does not work for me in Chrome-- the only options under "Open" are "Go to Folder" and "Connected Apps" when what I want is to "Show in Finder" or "Open in Finder." Thank you âşď¸

Hi Scott, I read through all of your posts & the replies (9 pages worth) and it sounds like you've had the most luck getting help from the team at Dropbox. Do you have a solution yet? If so, I'd love to learn from you. I've been a Dropbox user with a paid pro account for over a decade and the lack of ability to open files via finder on my Mac from Safari is quite problematic for my workflows. Thank you âşď¸

Oops, perhaps I should add that it also does not work for me in Chrome-- the only options under "Open" are "Go to Folder" and "Connected Apps" when what I want is to "Show in Finder" or "Open in Finder."

Hello KristinJoys ,
Thanks for reaching out. I am also a Dropbox Professional user and like you, I am reminded of this problem multiple times every day as I have to alter my workflow because of this issue. I started this thread a long time ago and never imagined for a moment that we would still be asking for a solution to this significant issue years later.
Unfortunately despite having several interactions with the Dropbox team, the issue persists. When Jay reached out recently seeking permission for Dropbox to make contact with us to work through the issue, I got hopeful of progress, however after just one email exchange I was advised that I should use Dropbox with Chrome rather than Safari and the "case" was closed before I could reply to indicate that using Dropbox with Safari was the issue we were trying to solve in the first place! đ¤ˇââď¸
So it seems we are no further ahead....
All the best,
Scott

Thank ever-so-much, Scott.
My challenge is that I can't get it to work with Safari OR Chrome, so my hands are really tied. Can I ask how you got it to work with Chrome? âşď¸
- WildfireQueen4 years agoHelpful | Level 7The problem is that with dropboxâs new redesign, the option âopen in finderâ when previewing is gone as well in chrome. Itâs unfortunate that Dropbox is choosing to deprecate such an efficient and workflow improving function.
Itâs only an option in Dropbox.comâs list view by selecting the file, clicking on the three dots and the selecting âshow in finderâ. - KristinJoys4 years agoExplorer | Level 4
Thanks WildfireQueen
Unfortunately I no longer have a "show in finder" option on Safari or Chrome (if I click on a shared file link).
I use Dropbox constantly throughout the day and prefer using it in my Mac Finder (rather than my web-browser).
I have the app preferences set so that folders are suppose to open in finder (screenshot here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/f0r2cxxly0tzn72/Screen%20Shot%202021-12-19%20at%206.12.00%20PM.png). It sounds like some others here at least have a "show in finder" option on Chrome. I'd love for that to work for me (though Safari would be best) âşď¸
- WildfireQueen4 years agoHelpful | Level 7It used to be that, when clicking on a Dropbox link, it would open in Chrome in preview mode. Then you could click on âopen withâ and âopen in finderâ wouldâve been an option. (Iâm speaking from memory, so it might be a bit different haha). But with the redesign theyâve removed that as an option. Now you have to click on the arrow back, so Dropbox will show you the folder the fileâs in in list-view (on Dropbox.com still). There you have to select your file and click the three dots. Then youâll have the option to âshow in finderâ. So still usable, but it takes more clicks and thus is way less efficient than before.
- WildfireQueen4 years agoHelpful | Level 7As far as I know itâs not possible to open links in finder directly, if that is what you meant.

This is so helpful WildfireQueen, unfortunately it doesnt work for me in Chrome (or Safari).
I used the screenshot link I sent you to create this new screenshot showing the options I get in Chrome when use the back arrow to navigate to the folder and then click on the 3 dots: https://www.dropbox.com/s/7gwb1h5uii88x8v/Screen%20Shot%202021-12-19%20at%206.42.15%20PM.png
Do you know what I might be doing wrong? đŹ

That is strange, I do have the option to 'show in finder' in that view, with the same settings. For me it doesn't matter if it's a personal dropbox or business one. And which of the two options of three dots you click on doesn't matter either (in the file row like you do, or in the menu on top with a file selected as I've shown below).
It should be below 'version history'... :

I can also confirm that in Chrome on my M1 Mac, the "Open" and "in Finder" options are *only* available from the List View of the entire folder. The fact that in the unique Dropbox link for the actual file you have to click "Open" and then "Go to Folder" and *then* click the three button dropdown (in either location in the List), and *then* click "Open", and *THEN* select "Finder" is utterly absurd. Any one of us can use Spotlight Search or Alfred to find these files far faster.
I haven't yet installed the new beta version of the Dropbox native M1 app to see if this brings back any of these options, but my guess is that it won't. It seems when Dropbox finally giveth, it also taketh away.

Thanks for confirming I'm not alone in this dgreeney ... but sorry it's not working for you either đ

Dropbox, can you explain why you've downgraded this functionality so?
Is there a reason for it, because it doesn't seem hiding such an initially efficient option behind several clicks and pages is very user friendly.
Would be great if you could give an actual explanation after people waited for several years for the fix of the option in Safari and you recently downgrading the functionality in Chrome with the new redesign. Or explain the thought process behind it. Instead of "investigating" the "issue" with individual users and not following up on those "investigations". Especially since it's not a bug or issue with the user, but a conscious designchoice Dropbox made.
Frankly, I think all of us here would really love an update on where you stand in this. I've taken time and effort to explain and document the issue, and haven't heard anything back after you've requested that information from me.

This is extremely disappointing and now they have taken away the Dropbox App for Mac... I am disappointed in the lack of accountability dropbox has taken in this matter, with no effort to resolve it... I am working to move our whole law firm to start using an alternative system for file storage/sharing as we are all 100% working remotely and have to have a system that is user friendly and actually works.

I just had a long chat with Dropbox dude. This issue has not been solved. They removed this very useful option and hid it behind 5 clicks (if you know what you're doing). This is a big waste of time and patience for someone working with dropbox files all day long.
- dgreeney4 years agoHelpful | Level 6
It sure is a waste of time! I don't even bother with the "Open in Finder" option anymore. It's buried so deep that it's far easier to just use the Mac Dropbox app, search for the file (even using part of a word) and then quickly "Open in Finder" from there.
We'll see how long it is until Dropbox gets rid of this very useful feature, too!
