Add .dropboxignore directory to exclude folders without using selective sync
Please please please can you add a feature that allows folders to be excluded from the Dropbox account (on windows and mac). For sure I'm not the first person to request this, but I'm yet to find a good explanation of why it's not there. A quick google search reveals loads of people also looking for the same feature. I really like the workflow I have with dropbox, but it's getting to the point where I might switch providers in order to allow better selective sync.
I've seen hackish solutions using selective sync, but it would be great if this could be done in one of the following ways:
- global pattern matching eg "node_modules"
- a marker file in the directory like .dropboxignore
- a simple right click context menu "Ignore this folder"
Other than that, keep up the good work. Cheers.
Tom

I'd pay for this feature.
Too bad that Dropbox doesn't have it. Sync looks good. Oh well, bye bye Dropbox, it was a nice 7 years. Unfortunately like this it is unusable for me as I can not use it to backup / sync my projects which is the only thing I use it for.

Like others, I also feel the wait for this is silly.
I have just signed up for a free Sync.com account and will give that a try for at least a couple of weeks and see if it is worth switching over permenantly.
Would rather stick with what I've got but it's ridiculous that this feature request doesn't appear to have even been acknowledged by DB.

This has been suggested time and time again, and it's still ignored.
I can only assume Dropbox has some kind of strange incentive not to do it.

This is really a killer feature if this one was implemented ! :)

Yeah we need this.
Because I have the visual studio solution in my dropbox folder so that the source code is INSTANTLY spread across computers as soon as I save a file and drop box syncs it, not crappy svn/git where you have to actually check in changes and then you forget to and then on another computer you cant continue because it isnt up to date because the latest changes are on another computer that hasn't been commited, so dropbox is the only solution for me.
But, the .pdb and .obj files are kinda big and take a lot of my drop box space, and waste a lot of your drop box servers bandwidth by having to constantly upload new versions of these build files.
Wouldn't it be better if I could just say that I want .map .obj .pdb etc to be excluded from syncing in certain folders of my dropbox account?

It would actually be nice to have dropbox to ignore synchronizing specific folders with a given name or pattern!

The way I see it this is a feature that doen't really make much bussines sense to Dropbox, they'd prefer us to use DB as inefficiently as posible, so we are forced to use premium.
just use bitbucket for coding and google cloud storage for backups. I'm just about done with DB.
otherwise +1

I've been following this thread for years as well - today was the final straw.
Hello, sync.com. Oh, you have an ignore file that Just Works, you're cheaper than dropbox, and you're not subject to the Patriot Act?
I'm clearly late to the game. Bye, Dropbox.
