29 TopicsAllow Users to Pause Auto Updater
Dropbox checks for new versions and updates automatically, but various partner vendors such as Boxifier may experience issues with supporting new versions (as just occurred with Boxifier). The solution to get Boxifier working again immediately was to find an older version of Dropbox (with the help of the Dropbox Support Team), then manually disable the Dropbox Auto Updater services through Computer Manager in Windows 11. Because this is not an isolated incident, and there is the possibility of future Dropbox updates causing individual issues on various user devices, it would be a great feature if users could revert back to the previous working version of Dropbox and disable auto updates through the settings feature in Dropbox until the issue is resolved.24Views1like1CommentStop Downloading Before Out Of Disk
Today, Dropbox does not gracefully handle running out of disk. It keeps going until it gets an error from the operating system that there's not enough space left at which point it's not even able to show you how much space it's using because there's not enough disk space for that to function. Ideally Dropbox would leave at least a couple GB so the system can keep functioning until the user has time to do something about it. Also, don't keep retrying - one notification after another about not being able to download is useless until a significant amount of space has been freed up one way or another. Making it easy to open a window with space usage and encouraging the user to keep more files cloud only would be much more user friendly.39Views2likes2CommentsView in folder, Save to folder buttons in screenshot quick-actions popup.
Summary: After taking a screenshot on Windows with the Dropbox desktop app, I almost always need to move it to the right Dropbox folder. Current behavior: The quick-actions popup doesnât include an option to open the screenshotâs folder, or to save it to a different folder, so I have to manually find it in the Screenshots folder and then move it. Requested behavior: Add a âView in folderâ button and/or a âSave to folderâ button directly in the post-screenshot quick-actions popup so I can immediately open the fileâs location or choose a destination folder. The Save to folder could be under the Save in a dropdown menu and the View in Folder could be on the top bar to the left of the Save button. Why it helps: Faster organization right after capture, fewer clicks, and a smoother workflow for frequent screenshots.29Views0likes1CommentLocal links
Problem In our Dropbox Business account, we often need to share links to files or folders with colleagues who already have access and have Dropbox installed. Currently: When we use the âShareâ feature, the link opens in the browser. This is inefficient when the user just needs to open the local file/folder, especially for deeply nested folders. Or worse, the person sends the file as an email, and now we have multiple versions and confusion about which is the "source of truth". Workaround: We have to manually send them the file path (e.g., /Users/bob/Dropbox/ProjectX/Report.docx), which: Requires the recipient to hunt it down in Finder/Explorer. Is error-prone due to path differences, renames, or accidental typos. Offers a worse user experience than comparable tools like Google Drive File Stream, which can open the file directly via a smart link from the web. Proposed Solution Introduce a new link format â .dropboxlink files â that can be double-clicked or opened to launch the Dropbox desktop app, which then opens the file or folder locally. How it might work: The link includes a Dropbox-relative path (e.g., /ProjectX/Report.docx). When opened, the Dropbox app: Resolves the correct local file path on that device. Brings the file into sync if itâs online-only (with options if needed). Opens the file in its native app or highlights it in Finder/Explorer. Key Benefits Faster collaboration: Opens files/folders locally with one click. Less error-prone than copying/pasting paths. Easier onboarding: Helps users avoid learning about aliases, sync paths, or browser UX differences. Reusable: These .dropboxlink files could be stored on desktops, added to docs, or included in readme files for onboarding. Design Considerations Security: Only opens if user has access. Device-aware: Dropbox app already tracks where the folder is located per device. Fallbacks: If the file is no longer available, provide a browser fallback or a âRequest Accessâ flow. If offline or not synced, offer user-friendly prompts (e.g. âMake available offlineâ).654Views3likes2CommentsThe Linux Desktop App should have feature parity with the Windows/OSX app
The Linux desktop app is incredibly lacklustre compared to its Windows and Mac counterparts. With more and more people dropping Windows in favour of Linux, this needs addressing. Notably, it's missing Online-Only sync options. The app also looks super outdated, especially on GNOME desktop environments.39Views0likes1CommentAdd an option to prevent a thumbnail popup when taking a screenshot
When you use Dropbox desktop app on Windows and enable the option; "Save screenshots to Dropbox" a thumbnail of a screenshot appears at the corner of the screen when a screenshot is taken. This popup needs to be manually closed if you want to take another screenshot. There should be an option in the Preferences to prevent the popup.495Views0likes8CommentsMake Dropbox compatible with Linux ARM processors
When I searched for this, I found this suggested several months ago for the purpose of Raspberry Pis. That suggestion was closed for inactivity. I had been using Dropbox in my Linux virtual machines on Mac with Intel processors for quite a long time. I just got my first Mac machine with Apple Silicon and was so disappointed this didn't work in the Linux VM on the ARM64. I depend on ability to share between the Virtual Machine and other devices connected to Dropbox for several of my workflows, and currently must use the Dropbox website to download, make my change, delete the online copy, then upload it again while in the Linux Virtual Machine. And hey, it sounds like adding this would help the Raspberry Pi folks too!104Views3likes2CommentsWindows explorer cascading menus
In explorer integration, dropbox places all the actions at the top-level menu. For those of us who have a large menu already, this is an unnecessary clutter. It would be great to have a single menu item for all dropbos actions, so that the actions will open in a sub-menu.71Views0likes1Commentcontext menu
Select which options appear in the context menu (When you Right Click) This suggestion appears to be one relatively sought after as there are multiple 'help threads' with people trying to do this, and no shortage of information for people to do it through unsupported and unofficial means. The reason I suggest allowing users to chose what options that appear, is because I personally would only need one or two of the options available (currently in Windows 10) and will rarely ever need another one or two. Even embedding these options in some kind of menu so they don't fill up the context menu with 7 (for me) additional items would be an improvement!107Views1like3Comments
