Re: CertFindCertificateInStore failed with: (-2146885628) Cannot find object or property.
It looks like a DropBox certificate has exceeded its 367 day life, after 20th Jan 2021. I have a dozen or so of these since that date:
Log Name: Application
Source: DbxSvc
Date: 05/03/2021 15:56:04
Event ID: 281
Task Category: (4)
Level: Error
Keywords: Classic
User: N/A
Computer: TONY-PCW7
Description:
CertFindCertificateInStore failed with: (-2146885628) Cannot find object or property.
Please fix these up in your next product update cycle.

Hi td47, thanks for posting today!
Could you try reinstalling the Dropbox desktop application, without uninstalling it first, using this link to see if this resolves the issue?
Keep me updated with any progress! - td475 years agoCollaborator | Level 8
JayMany thanks for the suggestion. I have done that, and have been monitoring for about 10 hours now. It DOES seem to have stopped those 281 errors, so if I do not see any ID 281 against DbxSvc, in a couple more days, I will mark this as a solution. While in the Event Viewer, I DID spot 107 Event ID 320 logs, all showing the same, from last November until today.NOTE: the re-install from your link was completed at 09:44 this morning.
"Source: DbxSvc Date: 19/03/2021 17:21:23
Event ID: 320
Task Category: (3)
Level: Information
Computer: T*********Description:
Failed to connect to the driver: (-2147024894) The system cannot find the file specified. , retrying... "These things are probably NOT widely reported, as only Techies tend to look at the event logs, but anyway, if you feel a new post is best to doument the above, I will do that.

We appreciate the feedback on this matter.
I'd recommend keeping the app up to date, if it doesn't upgrade automatically, to see if this helps with the event logs. - td475 years agoCollaborator | Level 8
JayFirstly, my Dropbox program DOES automatically update itself, so are you suggesting that somehow that the background auto-update is NOT robust, and does NOT do all the functions needed by an in-place update?
As stated, I need a couple more days before posting a resolved status, for the Event 281.
As regards the other events, the 320, would you prefer me to start another thread post?

Even with the latest public version 118.4.460, I see regular Event ID 320 in the event log. Here is a typical one:
"Log Name: Application
Source: DbxSvc
Date: 19/03/2021 17:21:23
Event ID: 320
Task Category: (3)
Level: Information
Keywords: Classic
Computer: T*********Description: Failed to connect to the driver: (-2147024894) The system cannot find the file specified. , retrying... "
There are NO sync issues in my account, and NO missing files, so I see this as a DRIVER FILE internal to the DbxSVC service API functionality, and NOT related to an actual file "sync" - despite the confusing error message. Of course, you may have more info/tools on this at your disposal, so if there is any more information that I get for you to look into this further, please let me know.

There are some apps that prevent the Dropbox desktop application from updating as it might affect their own program, or security restrictions. The auto-updater is blocked from updating for these reasons.
Regarding the events you're seeing, we appreciate the feedback on this matter and for bringing it to our attention.
If any other issues occur please let me know. - td475 years agoCollaborator | Level 8
JayMy auto-updater is NOT blocked, as I see regular updates. As regards the event id 320 errors, I found an old post on this, dating back to 2017, where this is "by design"!!! Apparrently it is to do with the "Smart Sync Driver", that only business users and some premium users might have. So they designed the DbxSvc.exe to call the driver, and if no response, then they know it is not loaded, and therefore not in use.
DB developers were saying then (in 2017) that it is "by design" and that they do not intend to fix it.
Surely there is a better/smarter way to tell if the driver is active or loaded or not, rather then use a basic (seemingly crude) method that is currently coded, that triggers an error event in Windows. I would rather NOT have an event error in MY event log, that adds to the clutter already there, if it can be avoided! After all, the DriverView utility by Nir Sofer has been doing this since 2003!
Can anyone ask DB Devs if they intend to make their code Smarter, to match the Smart Sync driver, 4 years down the line??

Hi Jay,
I am having the same problem and I've tried to update the app but I still have the same error at the event log.
"CertFindCertificateInStore failed with: (-2146885628) Cannot find object or property"
I didn't uninstall the app following the instructions just update the app, the current version is 120.4.4598
I appreciate your help.
Tks,

Same here.
Have this for langer time now and would like to get rid of it.
I have had uninstalled it, re-installed it, and now just as suggested installed without uninstalling. Twice. Error still occurs.

Still gettting these errors
CertFindCertificateInStore failed with: (-2146885628) Cannot find object or property.
Installed dropbox latest installer (v 1.3.503.1)
Another pc in the same house built on a ryzen chipset has no trouble.

This is absolutely maddening.
The "this link" referenced below leads to a page to either Open Dropbox to Get Started or Remind Me Later - both lead to my dropbox on the web. Although, I get prompted to Open Dropbox on my computer, but when I click that, it doesn't open the desktop app, it opens the gdamn file explorer!
If I click on my profile icon and click to Install Dropbox App, it takes me to the same **bleep** page.
This experience is like being stuck in groundhog's day. Support docs for dropbox are all over the place, totally disorganized and circular.
This is on Win 10. DB v 138.4.2392. My DB tray icon has a red X, doesn't seem to be syncing, and I'm getting regualr dbxsvc 281 errors.
Is it possible to still install DB over itself while still running? - Foxfan1003 years agoNew member | Level 2
Late to this, but having just upgraded from the Free version to Plus, running on W11 22H2 on a 64bit PC, I am finding the 281 error suddenly occurring frequently and clogging up my Event Viewer,
The version of Dropbox is 182.4.6427, and I've been through the rigmarole of uninstalling, reinstalling, and reinstalling over the existing installation.
I don't recall ever seeing this problem when I was running the free 5gb version, but having paid for more capacity, I now find this cropping up all the time.
It seems to be a longstanding problem, and has anyone got answers as to why and what the surefire fix for it is. I really can't keep experimentally installing etc. on the offchance that something might work.

Hey Foxfan100, sorry to hear the same thing is happening to you.
I had a look into our system, and I can see you've also opened a ticket with our support team.
Since they have account visibility on their end, I'd suggest continuing with them directly, and they'll look into this further. I've left them an internal note with your comments here, as well.

same ver of Win 11 here, same error...
- Foxfan1003 years agoNew member | Level 2
@AllanD
I got an answer back on this, which is roughly along the lines of "it's a Microsoft thing, and it's not significant for Dropbox (Para. 4 their response below)".
This is the response, and I quote from their email; quote begins:-
"I hope my email finds you well!
The file dbxsvc.exe is a component that we use as part of the Dropbox Sync Experience.
Should you not be a team user, or not sync online-only files, then this file will never start operating. It is, however, created at install for all users regardless of whether you are opted in.
Please note that the issue you are experiencing is technically the volume of times it is writing to the error log, rather than any issue indicated by the process's presence in that error log. In short, due to the way Microsoft categorizes something as report-worthy, we would expect the process to be mentioned in that log 3 times every 24 hours.
At this point, we want to reassure you that everything is working properly and that doesn't indicate a fault.
With that in mind, we understand that you may not wish to see this behavior and apologize if these entries were concerning to you.
We would not recommend attempting to disable dbxsvc.exe. Please note that updating the desktop application or re-installing it will also attempt to re-add this process.
The dbxsvc.exe service will be installed and running as long as the Dropbox desktop application is installed. It is used to either install or uninstall dbx.sys when a user chooses to opt into or out of Sync features.
Finally, If the dbxsvc.exe is not running or does not exist, the Dropbox desktop application will not be able to install dbx.sys, the minifilter to enable Sync features. The Dropbox desktop application doesn't have administrator rights to install or load the driver, these actions are preformed by the dbxsvc.exe service.
I hope this helps. Don’t hesitate to reach out if there is something else you need." :end quoteI suspect that you are a bit like me, in that we both check the Event Viewer regularly, and don't like unexplained Errors piling up in it, especially when they relate to a known process and can be pinned to timings of said process.
I guess we should be reassured by this response, but I can't say that I'm entirely happy to have dbxsvc continue to deliver this volume of errors, albeit down to a Microsoft foible.

Received the error in the Event Log Application, makes the PC reboot when the error occurs.
The general error is:
CertFindCertificateInStore failed with: (-2146885628) Cannot find object or property.
I have a fresh reinstall using the advance reinstall from this page:
https://help.dropbox.com/installs/advanced-reinstallIt was good yesterday, but today, the error starts re-appearing. What is the next solution. I can't have my work PC to reboot in Virtual meetings 5 times a day. FOr now, I quit the application when I start the computer, which defies the use of Dropbox.

sdrolet, is it alright to log a ticket for you instead, and investigate further?
We can email you here, if that's OK.

Same errors here, same crap. Over 40 years writing software and my 14yo could out-do you. So after having been a customer for, what, nearly 20 years or so?? I'm gone.
