"only online mode" from the command line

"only online mode" from the command line

Hello!
My program writes data to a file (the file is located in the Dropbox folder), when the program has completed its work, I want the resulting files to become "online only" automatically. Now I have to manually set this option, maybe there is a way to call the option "only online mode" for the file from the command line?

Or what are the options in my case?
The fact is that my program writes large files, and I cannot store them locally.

Hey there (@jonicae), while setting your folders to Online-only :cloud: through the command line isn’t an available feature (therefore you’ll have to adjust your settings locally on the file/folder-level), we’re always looking for user input when creating the next version of the Dropbox app. Since other users may be interested in this feature, I’ve moved your post to the Share an Idea section :light_bulb:, where they could upvote your post .

Please feel free to ping me back in case you have more questions or I have misunderstood your inquiry in any way. Thanks for choosing Dropbox & have a wonderful week ahead!

I also have a case where an option like this would be very usefull. I.e. copying data into the dropbox folder and then set online-only. An alternative would be to have a setting on a folder that makes all new files in that folder online only and keeps them that way (I.e. files are outomatically "deleted" localy after a shortish timeout)

I modified a piece of software to make this work for me.  Here it is on github.

-cloned from-

It will upload a file to a dropbox folder of your chosing.  Mark the folder as 'online only' prior to the upload, and this should work.

Good luck!  Hope you enjoy the tool.  Sucks that Dropbox didn't give this to us out of the box.

Really need this - is possible from OneDrive see https://www.theexperienceblog.com/2017/09/26/use-attrib-to-pin-and-unpin-files-and-folders-for-onedr...

I wonder if there is some combination of settings that could achieve the same thing given Dropbox's integration with the OS - maybe a Dropbox tech could help with some inside info.

Just installed the linux dropbox drivers and was looking for the online-only option. I'm surprised it's not an option from the outset.

My cloud-based VM machine has limited storage space, while my dropbox Pro account has 2TB. My current VM can not accommodate a full-sync from dropbox. Upgrading my VM storage is very costly and would defeat the point of also paying for Dropbox, so an online-only setting becomes a necessity.

I would be equally surprised if this scenario is unique to me.
