Changing your mindset while working from home

Working from home is something we’re pretty much used to at this stage, but it is still a relatively new situation for most of us. So as we’re hitting the year mark of our home being our office too, we’ve made all the changes to our desks, our routines and our ways of working, but have we shifted our thinking enough? The team over at the Work in Progress blog have created a Virtual Toolkit to help you out while working from home, and we loved some of the topics covered here.

Focus on impact, not busyness

You might have seen our piece on this before, but this year and the gigantic shift it brought has been a major opportunity to look at how we are working, and even more at how we recognize that work. It doesn’t have to be physical presence or sitting at a desk from X a.m - Y p.m. to prove you can get your work done. It might be a good time to consider setting your new goals based on outputs or the impact of your work, rather than time spent on it. We looked at this in a little more detail here. We also took a look at how getting distracted doesn’t have to be a big deal, you can check that out here.

Embrace async work

When we were all sitting on the same floor, it made sense to meet in person, at a specific time. Now you have the option of doing virtual meetings over Zoom, or you can often replace some meetings with asynchronous updates. This means people share their updates when they have the info, or the time, and no one is stuck in a meeting thinking ‘this could have been an email’. You might have seen us talking about this here too

Be patient with yourself, and each other

Experts in habit formation know that it takes time to change human behavior, habits and how we think. This is especially true for large groups of people. As we learn to work virtually, there’s a lot to take in, and there is still a whole lot going on in the wider world and many people can’t de-stress the same ways they used to, at least for now. So while there are some great things happening, and some real progress happening in how we work, people can still feel overwhelmed now and then. Give yourself and your teammates permission to make mistakes, and you can learn from them. If you’re a manager, you might need to think about how you give feedback too, but don’t worry we have some tips and trick you can use here

We want to know what you think about working from home, so tell us in the comments below!
