Thumbnails are missing, cannot preview images on local files.

New member | Level 2

The thumbnails are not showing a preview for any of my photos unless each individual photo is openned. One of our work computers is fine but there are 2 that do not show the previews. Need this fixed ASAP

Hey there @SLAdesign,

Can you let me know a little more info such as the device’s OS that you’re seeing this on?

Also, please let me know the current sync status of desktop app and the state of the files you don’t see the previews for (online only/local).

Let me know what you find - Cheers!

I also have this problem after attaching images to a gmail email, they were being uploaded to be sent as links, I canceled the upload, and now the pictures appear to be saved locally, but the previews do not appear.

Hey @J S.14, thanks for joining us here!

Can you just clarify for me, were you attaching files from your Dropbox desktop folder into your email?

When you mention attaching the file, were you trying to add a shared link to the file within the email, or to attach the file itself?

Would you mind sending me a screenshot of how the file appears within now without the preview?

Let me know and we'll go from there!

Hi,

Same problem here, the weird thing is that only "online-only" images get thumbnails while the local images don't. All my windows explorer thumbnail settings are correct as mentioned in other FAQ, so I don't understand why it makes the difference between the two states.

Thanks for joining us here @Bobibo3!

Could you just try right clicking one of those files and choosing "Open with..." and try setting the default to another previewing app?

In another thread (here), a user mentioned that doing this resolved the issue that they were having.

Let me know how it goes!

The preview thumbnails only changes to the other image viewer's placeholder image.Thumbnail_not_showing_local_images_changed default.png

I would also like to note that this problem only occurs in DropBox synced folders and even after disabling Backup software or Antivirus software it still doesn't show the thumbnails.

Copying the images in another folder that is not synced with Dropbox, shows the correct thumbnails.Thumbnail_not_showing_local_images_Side-to-side.png

Hey @Bobibo3, apologies for my late reply here!

Can you just let me know which version of the desktop app you have installed?

Also, if you close the desktop app do you see the thumbnails preview as you showed outside of the Dropbox folder? You can close the app with the following steps:

  1. Clicking the Dropbox icon in your system tray.
  2. Click the profile pic/initials icon in the top right of the window.
  3. Choose "Quit Dropbox".

Keep me posted - thanks!

Hi Daphne,

That would be v88.4.172.

If I quit DropBox, the same problem still occurs, only the small green badges change to crosses.
