Save space on your hard drive with Selective Sync

  1. Right-click the Dropbox icon in the system tray or menu bar.
  2. Click the gear icon.
  3. Select Preferences.
  4. Go to the Account tab.
  5. Select Change Settings...
  6. Uncheck the box next to the folder's name to prevent a folder from syncing to your computer

Any folders you uncheck will stop syncing to your hard drive. However, they’ll still be available on dropbox.com and on any other computer linked to your Dropbox account.

Uninstall the desktop app

  1. First, stop Dropbox (if needed):

    1. Right-click the Dropbox icon in the system tray or menu bar.
    2. Click the gear icon in the Notifications panel and select Quit Dropbox.
  2. Next, follow the instructions for your operating system:

    Windows
    1. Click the Start button.
      • Windows Vista, 7, or XP users: select Control Panel.
      • Windows 8 or 10 users: type Control Panel at the start screen or start menu, and click it
    2. Click Uninstall a Program (Vista, 7, 8, 10).
    3. Select Dropbox from the list of programs and click Uninstall

    Mac
    1. Open Finder
    2. Drag and drop Dropbox from your Applications folder to the Trash.

    Linux

Run the following commands in your terminal, hitting Enter or Return on your keyboard after each command:

    1. dropbox stop
    2. dropbox status # Should report "not running"
    3. rm -rf ~/.dropbox-dist
    4. rm -rf /var/lib/dropbox
    5. rm -rf ~/.dropbox*
    6. sudo apt-get remove nautilus-dropbox
    7. sudo apt-get remove dropbox
    8. rm /etc/apt/source.d/dropbox

Move Dropbox to an external drive

  1. Right-click the Dropbox icon in the system tray or menu bar.
  2. Click the gear icon in the Notifications panel.
  3. Click Preferences.
  4. Click Account.
  5. Select a new location for the Dropbox folder by clicking the dropdown menu next to Dropbox location.
  6. Let Dropbox move your folder and its contents to its new location.

Notes:
  • If the drive gets disconnected from the computer while Dropbox is running, Dropbox may start deleting files before realizing that the entire drive has been removed.
  • For best results, your drive should be formatted as:

    • Windows—NTFS
    • Mac OS X—HFS
    • Linux—A file system that supports extended attributes
  • The location you select is the folder the Dropbox folder will be moved to, rather than the folder your Dropbox files will be stored in.
