Dropbox help advises to go to preferences in dropbox.com to deal with setting a save location for MS Word, but where are preferences stored for this requirement?

What do you mean? 

 

Are you trying to set a cloud storage location as a file -> Save As menu option within Word? If so it isnt possible to use Dropbox I'm afraid
