Dropbox Backup
21 TopicsCamera Uploads - change location, more functions.
Allow changing the location of the Camera Uploads folder (and its name, as many suggested before). Allow automatic folder organization based on file origin (or any folder organization). 1. The Camera Uploads folder is anchored to the top of the file directory. If you try to move it, Dropbox will re-create it in the original location. Cloud services should make it a rule to never force any folder locations. Even OneDrive, for all its faults, allows me to move its equivalent of Camera Uploads anywhere I want (but it will stubbornly keep creating Chats with AI folders, even though I never chat with Copilot). It is a minor thing, but it is annoying to see Camera Uploads outside of my Full Media Archive folder. 2. Camera Uploads shouldn't be a landfill. I personally generate about 250 videos and 10,000 photos a year across mobile devices. Untangling this rats' nest at the end of the year is a nightmare. Allow at least some grouping based on file origin. OneDrive lets you group by month —it's not much, but it helps. pCloud groups by origin folder on each respective device: phone/images/WhatsApp, phone/videos/WhatsApp, iPad/images, and so on. Kudos for at least being smart enough not to back up files twice once you move them out of the folder. Other clouds require setting "available online only," purging the media on the phone, and then moving the files without creating duplicates.85Views0likes2CommentsThe Dropbox app should have a dedicated backups tab
I hope this message finds you well. I primarily utilize Dropbox to back up my laptop files and maintain a clone copy of my external drive. The service has been invaluable in ensuring the safety and accessibility of my data. I wanted to suggest a feature that I believe would greatly enhance the user experience: the addition of a dedicated tab within the Dropbox app to view backups. Currently, this functionality is only available through the web interface. Having direct access to my backups via the app would significantly improve convenience, allowing me to quickly verify and manage my files wherever I am. I believe this feature would be beneficial not only to me but also to many other users who rely on Dropbox for comprehensive file backups. Thank you for considering this suggestion. I appreciate the continuous improvements you make to Dropbox, and I look forward to seeing how the platform evolves. Best regards, Jesus E.164Views2likes6CommentsScheduled camera uploads
I would like to schedule my Camera Uploads so that I have a chance to remove/organize things before they're uploaded. Ideally I could have options to set either the time or frequency - i.e. 2am every day, or "any item older than 6 hours." Two examples (on android) today: Sometimes I take 2 or 3 photos in order to choose the best one and delete the others. But even if I delete them quickly, dropbox is too efficient(!) and they've already upload there, where i have to clean them up again. If I take a screenshot and then edit it to add, say pen coverage, it uploads to dropbox as 2 files, even if I save over the original locally. Often I'm annotating an image to text to someone, but don't need it backed up in dropbox at all, so I'd delete it before uoload.217Views1like5CommentsOne Click Backup Restore
Hello! I was under the impression that I could restore my whole backup with one click when switching to a new MacBook. It turns out, after many bugs (such as only synching one folder, and not giving me options for the others), it is not possible. I also tried downloading the folders individually - and I am met with the error " Attempted to zip too many files" particularly when trying to download and restore my Lightroom Catalog folder. I am going to revert to using offline backup via Time Machine and thankfully I still have access to my old laptop, but I am a bit disappointed to see how tricky Dropbox Backup turns out to be. Hope this helps develop solutions and a better system for the future77Views2likes1CommentRelink/claim external drive (or any) backup from a different (new) computer
Hey team, I recently bought space to use the new Backups feature with an external drive. After the initial 2.5TB upload (which took about 9 days), the backup worked great until I upgraded to a newer computer. External drive backups are locked to the computer they were created on, so I can’t claim or relink them with a different computer, even if the external drive is the same. Your agents recommend deleting the old backup and creating a new one, which is a hassle since I’m uploading a lot of data and it takes a long time. I’m also without backup for the next week while I re-upload it. I pay extra for unlimited internet data, but that could be a problem for some people. I’d love to upgrade to fiber-based internet, but it’s not available in my neighborhood. I’m stuck with cable with a capped 50Mb/s upload speed and 1Gb/s download so for the time being, this will continue to be a problem with the backup service. The ability to relink or “claim” a backup for the same external (or any) device would be a great feature for your product roadmap. It’s not a daily feature, but when it comes up, it’s risky, costly, and time-consuming to manage without it. Features like this often get delayed because they’re considered edge cases, but they become major long-term pain points for users.226Views13likes5CommentsBe able to change Dropbox backup folders names on individual accounts
Add possibility of rename Backup folders. If you have only one computer, it go fine, but if you have more than one, it ends being very confussing. Due iCloud Drive issues, I've changed all of my Macs "synchronized" Desktop and Documents to Dropbox. However, take a look to the picture: It is very difficult to guess what is what. With the possibility to rename them, I could have named "My iMac", "My MBP 13", "My MBP 15". Very easy to see what is what. (As a workaround, we can change to detail view, but could be more easy for all of us be able to change the names).22KViews82likes88CommentsAllow Dropbox Backup to backup a second internal drive
Most of my files (550GB) are stored on a second internal drive D. I planned to use Dropbox Backup to secure them. Unfortunately this does not seem to be possible for the time being. I find this weird since the app already can backup external drives! Leif Andersen, prof., Denmark81Views0likes2Comments
